Giving this engine a good clean externally before rebuilding and refitting.

Looks nicer IMHO and makes for good pictures too

Any recommendations on what to use to clean that won't damage anything?

So far I've been using petrol & brake cleaner with a sponge scourer & toothbrush to clean. The interior of the sump is now looking spangly and new, but the outside is proving somewhat harder

Is it worth spraying it once it's clean and the block work done? Although it obviously won't stay that way, I thought it might look good for a short while and post rebuild photos  :?

Some people have recommended those cheapo steam cleaners for about £16 at Argoose :? Should remove the grease ok as its the steam that pro's use :)

Personally I use a combination of a old electric tooth brush, a stiff old corse brush and gunk the degreaser :) The best way is to get someone with either a chemical dip or a degreasing cabnet to do it for you :?

If you want to paint it i'd recommend either hammerite or smoothrite just like in the good old mk1 escort days 8)

Good point - I have a steam cleaner already, came with all manner of attachments and I have yet to use it

I'll give it a try :)

I found petrol and a toothbruash good for the inside of the sump, as you say.

The outside could probably do with a rub over with some wet and dry and a quick spray over with some black paint to make it look nice?

Steam cleaner on block soon got rid of all the stuck on gunk. Well impressed :)

Inside of sump etc is good as new, and the outside will get a rub down and some paint.

Sorted :)

Now what colours to paint everything?

Spray called tough black is excellent for this type of stuff and shiny when dry too.
