Update:

So I sold the brembos.
I could had made them work if I went with a cutom rotor in a larger diameter than the sti or evo rotors.

Using a radial mount caliper just makes it harder. A the guy who did do brembos for his gtfour did not use radial mount calipers.

Not sure what I am going to do yet. I still have the 205 rear calipers.
I was told that redrilled mk4 tt supra rotors would bolt on the rear. I can get a set of redrilled rear supra rotors for ~130usd vs 260usd for 205 rotors shipped from japan.

Here are the specs I found on both rotors from the dba site.

st205 rear specs: 315mm dia., total depth 59, disc thickness 16mm
185 rear specs: 288, 60, 10
mk4 tt rear specs: 324, 67.5, 16

Looks like if I was to use them on the rear, I suspect I would need a spacer to put the disc in the right place.
Even though this guy claims he used a 205 caliper on rear supra rotors.

Here are some pics of my next project once other things get done.

These things are at least the size of my z's brembos. If one was to get some custom hats and rotors, this might be a bolt on affair.

This is sort of what I am going for. He already did the swap using the same bits.

Around people have been having st205 discs milled down to ~305mm and using 4mm-4.8mm spacers to bring the disc further out.

So since I have the sti disc I was looking at the possible idea of milling them down like what is done with the st205 rotors. The sti discs are more shallow than the 205 discs but I am afraid they might be too shallow to mill them down like the others

I was doing the math, and I compared the rotor on the hub to the caliper and it looks like the the face of the sti disc would be .7 or so mm further out than the st205 rotor after being milled and fit with a 4.8mm spacer. Since the disc is thinner, a 1mm spacer could be put on the inside brake pad to make up the centering different but the outside pad might be too close to the face. I do not have new pads in hand, so I can not get a true reading other than the numbers I crunch. It seems easier to add a spacer to a rotor than trying to move a it the other way since it is fixed.

I wonder if you had a sti rotor hat, if a 1mm ring spacer could be put between the hat and the disc to make the rotor perfectly centered on the caliper.

I am sure I could have the ear of the caliper taken down 1mm, but I am not sure if that would cause an issue with material strength.

EDIT: It looks like they make spacers for the hats. I only need a 1-2mm one though if I get sti rotor hats.

So here is a question for you st205 owners.
How good are the oem st205 brakes really?
I have heard that the design is very similar to the MK4 supra calipers, but that may not really mean squat in actual braking efficiency. I have noticed that the pad sweep area is larger than many aftermarket calipers, but I do not know how important of a factor that is compared to race applications.

How well do these brakes hold up in tracking conditions? I am sort of wanting to verify they are worth the trouble of trying to fit to a 185 before I put too much effort into it.

Having owned both St185 then St205 then St185 (and tracked the St205). The st205 brake setup with some good pads is bloody good IMHO.

Going back to the St185 was truely frightening, even in standard tune they are inadequate.

Unless you are racing the St205 brake setup will suffice IMHO.

I will mostly be doing canyon run type driving and some short course events. I might hit the track a couple times a year. Right now I am debating on my rotor option for using my 205 caliper on the 185.

Hi,

i drive rally-cross with the st205 brakes (uprated disc and pads) and there are no problems, also a rallydriver from austria drive with them and uprated group N discs and pads -> no problems

Think yourselves lucky, the 185 brake setup was an upgrade for the 165!

I have 1 word to describe the 165 stock brakes - Margarine!

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I will stick with my 205 calipers. I am deciding now on my front rotor options.
I was going to bolt the calipers to the hub and get some 2-piece rotors made, but I found that my wheels will not fit the calipers due to the spoke design. I need something in the range of 326mm - 357mm rotors to fit my wheels unless I use a spacer, and I am really not keen on adding a spacer on my wheels in the front.

That might change depending if I swap out to a rav4 spindle or not. I am at least using a rav4 hub, so that will open up to many more rotor options. I will still likely get some 2piece rotors made to reduce my front unsprung weight.

What is the difference in the RAV 4 hub? Change to 114.3mm PCD? Any other changes?

Both of my ST205's have suffered from high speed vibration although this has only been noticeable on race circuits. I have replaced the rotors but its still noticeable so suspect it might be just general wear on bearings and joints after 100,000+ miles of road use :-(

For fast road and sprint tracks they are fine.

I suffer the same issue as Don

Under circuit conditions using TRD disks and TRD pads I get mild vibration braking from 100+ mph. This is nevrer an issue on the road

On track I've never experienced fade even running sticky trackday tyres

IIRC Mike thermal stickered his calipers and found that they run pretty cool

What is "thermal stickered?"

Could work SS parts be part of your vibration issues?

The only advantage of the the rav4 hubs are 5x114. I am looking into the spindles as well to see if there are any advantages to swapping the whole setup.

I am hoping I can run Supra TT rotors. I found that I could use some 14" or 355mm rotors, but I think the weight added will outshine their cooling capacity for normal use. The Supra rotors are cheap and easy to obtain and I can always upgrade to a 2-piece version when my budget is better.

We have a car scrap yard in my town that sells things very cheap so I have just been waiting for a rav4 to show up.

Thermal stickers are little stickers that record the highest measured temperature of whatever it is they are stuck to.
