That's the suspension work I'd love to do too. Have you got a chance to weigh the new parts and compare them to stock? Nice work again! :)

Nice a-arms. Now if I can figure out how to make me a set of those for the 185.

I'm suprised that the front arms aren't adjustable but I have no idea how you'd make them so or what you'd adjust

The weight saving on the front must be "quite" large - 2x banana arms, 2xsee-saw arms and 2xFig8 all of which are cast from solid heavy :D

The pics are really just a sneak preview. There's still a lot of work to be done. The subframes and the suspension components have just been temporarily assembled on the chassis. Eventually everything will be removed and the chassis/shell sent for painting.

The planned adjustment on the front suspension is toe-in and toe-out. Camber angle can be adjusted via the top mounts or camber plates on the hubs.

That's looking awesome Don. I can't wait till mine gets caged up. Is there a specific reason why you went for a cut bar in the side X's instead of 2 V-shaped bars? They're quite a bit safer in terms of side impact. Air jacks are hardcore! (I'm not going that far )

Thanks Rene :D. I'm not too sure what you mean by the 2 V bars?

The cage has been built from cold drawn high carbon steel (CDS) rather than T45. This means that it does not need to be an FIA homologated design. Despite this we have attempted to build the cage to be compliant with the FIA standard. The only exception I can see is the omission of the diagonal brace between the main roll hoop and the top door bar. I think we may aell add this just to be sure!

You might find the info below of interest:

According to the MSA 'Blue Book' -

For all Touring Car rollcages homologated by the FIA after 1999, the presence of the rollcage in the door aperture must comply with the following criteria (see illustration FIA 253-17D)

o Dimension A: Minimum 300mm
o Dimension B: Maximum 250mm
o Dimension C: Maximum 300mm
o Dimension D: Maximum 100mm (from upper corner of the windscreen, without the seal)
o Dimension E: Not more than half the height of the door aperture

Image

MSA-certified and non-homologated rollcages constructed after 2000 in accordance with Appendix 2, drawing 12 must comply with the above diemnsions.

I wish!...........there's still quite a few little bits and pieces to do. Small but time consuming things. I had a 'seat fitting' now that the Recaro is in and we have the quick release steering wheel. The steering column is bespoke but will use the OEM universal joint where it splines onto the steering rack.

Currently the seating position is too far forward by around 80-100mmso need to match that to the steering column lenght. With your own classic Itialian racing driver physique you will be familiar with this predicament

I hope this 10 sec MS Paint drawing makes sense:

Image

I've read and been told that the design on the left, with a cut bar welded onto the other to form an X - which has been used for ages - is considered less safe than the 2 bent bars welded together (with triangular pieces in the sides like yours obviously). WRC cars (are going to) use the design on the right (in the future).

I believe there also was an article about it on wrc.com, with some engineers from BP Ford explaining the advantages. It was also about the cut X vs double V design iirc.

Thanks for the dimension info. I'm sure the guys who're going to build mine have all specs needed as they do FIA cages for grp A8, N and R rally amongst others but that image makes it very clear. Thanks! 8)

Thanks Rene, we thought this might be what you meant. I believe the WRC and FIA GT guys all use T45 tube to save as much weight as possible. Its more likely to snap than CDS. Over the last couple of seasons a number of WRC drivers and co-driver have had serious accidents
