OK guys, as you may, or may not know, I have a project underway to convert/build my ST185 to compete in the Toyota Sprint Series.
Things are moving forward so I thought I would post some pics of the progress...

Will you be able to make the welded in sunroof blend in with the painted roof? I am debating on this route or a plug for when I remove the sunroof.

Any idea of how much weight you saved by getting rid of the pop ups?

Simply answer is for weight reduction, aerodyanimcs, ground effects and cooling.
Studied the cars in the Rally Cross, Japanese GT series (GT300 & GT500), BTCC, WTCC and DTM.
Also, I wanted to run a wider track width without altering the hubs, shafts, etc.
Did this by having Team Dynamics make me a set of Pro Race 1.2 wheels in the following measurements: 9Jx18, 5x100, ET18.
By doing this the wheel/tyre exceeds the width of the arch at the front by 3"...so going to need extended wheel arches.
Could only find 1 true wide body front bumper specifically for the 185.
Unfortunately, it was not available or the quality was cr*p.
So the guys doing the work looked around and came up with the 300ZX bumper.
Shut lines look good but a lot of fabrication needed to fit.
Functional scoop for driver cooling..it's going get hot in their.
Also acts as a ground effect to a certain extent.

Yes.
Welding it in is a pig of a job.
There's a bit of work with a special hammer to knock into shape/form.
Then a very thin layer of filler to smooth the edges.
Most of the fabrication is metal work and welding.
They only use filler to smooth edges.

Unfortunately not, sold the pop ups before weighing them :oops: ...but it is significant.
Also the rear bumper weight loss is also significant.

There is still a lot to be done but I'll keep pics coming as and when there's progress.

Exactly the look I was going for (GT300/500, DTM look) :D

This is pretty much the look we're going for but there is more to come, for example, going to need a return on the arches and there are certain aerodynamic options to take into consideration.

Why first put on different bumpers for weight reduction and then weld on a ton of sheetmetal??

Or are they just molds so you can make them out of polyester??

Good question.
Well the original plan was to use fibreglass wings which I had acquired. (So I had sold my original white wings).
Then it was decided that for structural integrity we would go for metal.
So I acquired another set of original wings (in black).
It was a comprise between weight reduction and rigidity.
We felt that although the metal would be heavier, it wouldn't be too much more than by the time you had fibreglassed and filled everything.
The advantage with using the metal is:
1. If I do 'run out of talent' and hit something, it's going to be less damage to the overall car and an easier to fix at a race meet (take a big hammer to it :D ) so as to be able to get back out and race.
2. The side skirts are welded to the car and chassis thus improving the rigidity of the car. (This idea came from some American cars, inparticularly cabriolets, having weld on sub-frame connectors to get rid of body flex - a bit like these: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=CEE%2D3046&N=700+4294924927+4294908216+4294908198+4294925130+115&autoview=sku
The other advantage of the way we are doing the side skirts is that infact they will have a ground effect.

I'll see how things go to start with but the advantage of doing it this way is that if I do decide to go the fibreglass/GRP/CF route then, as these are metal, they can be easily used to make moulds from.

Latest update on the project. Rollcage installation is posing a few problems. The cage was purchase as an OMP ST185 cage however, as is common with pre-fabricated cages, the fit is not perfect. Most of this can be addressed by fabricating mounting boxes welded into the shell.

Another update...
Roll Cage doesn't fit :(
Turns out that it is a 205 cage.
The subtle difference is that the A pillar bars are a touch wider than that of the 185. Also, the rear section is about 2 inches too short.
IIt could be made to fit with a lot of surgery but I've decided to sell the cage and look at a bespoke 6-point weld-in cage from a cage specialist.
