I have mate usinf the same turbo as me and have been for 5 years with out any problem at all. The main thing with any power up grade is to make shore your cooling is good

The Turbo Technics S148 single wastegate turbo has a custom cast turbine (hot side) housing. The experience of many is that they don't seem to suffer the boost creep which afflicts many hybrid turbos. As said above it can handle 1.5 bar but you will need to improve your air charge cooling at the very least. Engine cooling would also be improved if you fit a swirl pot and header tank similar to TTE

They dont do the single wastegate any more, but they have improved the twin wastgate and the turbo this seems to why there making 400bhp with them now. There rated to 1.6bar but have been told by 1 of the lads at TT it will take 1.8bar. As said cooling is the big thing to make shore is all good oil cooller and a good water cooling set up.

Just out of interest I haven't seen any links to dyno charts of the S148 running more than 400hp from a reputable rolling road - do you know of / have you seen any?

I doubt that the twin wastegate version is any better, fairly sure they would still be doing the single one if they had any castings left. I suspect its too expensive to do a casting run for such limited demand hence the return to the OEM exhaust housing once the singles were all sold.

this is 1 of my dyno print out

Image

this was on my old spec engine and 1.4bar if not be on a dyno after the last build its only been road mapped but you can feel is it quicker and pull harder, treacle with his st205 made 411bhp with the same turbo, I need to get my map tweaked soon so will be on a dyno so should have a new print out that I can put up, all so looking to be running 1.6-1.7bar if things are all good :), don't for get its not just down to the turbo for making power it all so has a lot to do with the engine manifold head stuff like that, I know when it was road mapped my mapper said it just wanted more and more fuel compaird to the old map, and the only thing different on this engine compared to the last 1 is all the head porting, side feed and tubular exhaust manifold.

The TT s148 wasn't a custom cast it was actually off another toyota (im guessing supra) to make a kind of mungral toyota turbo then they added bigger wheels but the supply of toyota exhaust castings dried up AFAIK.

I still use the early single wastegate turbo and was my daily driver for 4-5years still going strong 6yrs on. :)

That's interesting MrDB. Do you have a source for the information. I've not been able to find any OEM turbo that looks the same as the S148.

Either way - custom or not they appear to have run out.

Speaking of my own S148, 7 years old, it has the single waste gate port but has the twin entry ports where it joins to the exhaust manifold.
These twin ports only run for a couple of inches where it then opens right up.
Will see if I can find some pictures...
