I'm in need of a new battery and i am looking to take advantage of this to relocate it.

Two thoughts i have - one is to go for a red top battery and locate this where the ABS is normally situated - if i go this route what size battery should i go for?

the second thought is to relocate a new battery - if i go this route, whats the best battery to buy - and i see MrBarry does relocation kits and this looks like it will make the job fairly painless.

Your thoughts will be most welcome
cheers
Rob

Here's my thoughts Rob

I have never thought of relocating it to the ABS spot. But then i have ABs so it's not an option for me :(

If you can find a suitable Lead Acid (i.e "normal") battery then would be my preferred option without a shadow of a doubt. It keeps everything "safe" from both wiring and battery location perspectives:-
You have the battery external to the passenger cell so if it gasses there's no issues.
You also avoid the long wiring runs associated with a relo to the boot

Perfect setup IMO. You are also using a proper battery. The thing with Reed tops is that in theory they should not work. Their spec calls for a very carefully controlled trickle charging routine that cannot be achieved with the stock alternator
That said plenty of people do run them on the road. It would seem that as long as it doesn't go very flat the alternator does charge in a way that's sufficiently close to the recommended trickle to work

Spec wise I'd be looking for the biggest lead acid battery that will fit the ABS spot. I'd imagine you ought to get a 40AH job in there
Red top wise most people seem to run with a 30.

I have heard nothing but praise for MrBarry kits although I have never seen one in the flesh so can't comment.

Co-incidentally I'm in a similar spot. My batt goes flat after 3 weeks of inactivity so I'll be looking for a new home for it too

Kris was saying at the weekend that he's fitted a red top battery under the passenger seat. It's only something like 35Ah(?) compared to the 60Ah standard lead acid type so I'm not sure it will be man enough. Kris has had no problems so far though. It will be interesting to see how he goes over the next couple of months using his car on a daily basis.

I've just looked at the space and it seems that a 190x190x190 will fit with a bracket.
this battery looks like the kiddy.
http://www.tayna.co.uk/item/975/0/005R- ... page1.html

So i'm going to make up a bracket (or should i say i'll ask my fatherinlaw to make one, and then i'll work out the proper fitment.
I'll keep you posted on this.

Got to be a better solution than a redtop-a-like IMO. Providing ABS isn't fitted grrrrrrr

Another thought is to fit a v small normal lead acid battery. Incidentally a friend brought his Skyline and the battery he had fitted, (which looked stock), was ball bouncingly small...

This may be a better way forward, depending upon your plans?

mrbarry versions, fit the standard battery in the rear pasenger speaker slot with no probs.. think it takes about 5hrs o/a to fit the kit tho. :?

Have seen another option with a slimline unit fitted under the front passenger seat.

Has advantages of less power drop vis less initial power
available but also saves weight.

However if it lights up yer best friend gets fried  with the other option its only the passenger

I wonder how the insurance would view a mod like this?

probably very dimly unless it's accompanied by receipts far an auto spark

I know Dan J ran his under the seat fine for ages until the unfortunate incident where some spring came off the seat and shorted the battery giving his g/f of the time a bit of a fright I think lol

Allegedlt there's provision under the sear for the wiring though

I just dont like the idea of a side impact resulting in battery acid spraying everywhere in the cabin, which is entirely possible with the rear 1/4 panel speaker mounting option.

In either boot or passenger floor mounting, a suitable battery box should be used. The FIA stipulates their use for a reason.

My plan is to get a battery which is about 2/3 the height of the std one and swap the std air box and battery over.

Still can use much of the stock stuff but also have plenty of room for a straight air intake.

I looked at the relocation to the airbox location, it seems like a good choice.. either that or the ABS location - well now i got some choices!

When i do relocate it, i'll have an induction kit going cheap too!

I walked past our local car plan place today - they are doing short (height) batterys with 3 year guarantee for £30.

Time to get the tape measure out me thinks?

Why oh why do I always start doing stuff like this in the winter when it is wet and cold (grrrr) :?
