JP -the engine is going up to Jon Edwards to be built - he is going to check and measure the whole thing before anything is decided.

Chris - yes it has left lots of crud all over the faces.

Any comments on the bores folks?

It will need new over size pistons. See if it will get away with 86.25 or smaller diameter pistons.

Had any thoughts about measuring the block thickness? (Sorry to drag that tired old statement up!)

With regard to the head problem - you're going to have to get it checked... it may have damaged/worn the head journals significantly... wonder if it has the correct caps for that head? (we know they aren't in the right order... so maybe not even the original ones from the head?)

My 2p - Measure, measure and then re-measure everything or it won't survive and you'll have to do it all again...

As per Kris although I would also add, take lots of photos before and after. I know you have taken some but you can never take too many, especially of part number/size stampings etc. Given that Jon will be doing his own measuring I'm sure this will help guide him and maybe even save you some money by avoiding blind alleys. Just a thought.

Bit of an update.

The engine was dropped off at the builders 3-4 weeks ago and the process of measuring up was started. The block was also ultrasonically tested.

There were 3 main findings:

1. The bores have slight ovality that will require going out to 86.25mm Pistons.
2. The crank is slightly bent 3 thou, this will be straigtened and the surfaces measured then polished or ground and polished to remove the wear marks.
3. The ultrasonic testing revealled that the block is a good one and does not have an especially thin wall between 2/3.

I dropped some parts of with the builder today so he can get on with having the crank straightened then measuring up and doing the crank bearings/clearances.

New parts from Toyota - core plugs, dowels and new oil squirters.

The engine, crank and bearing caps have also now been acid stripped and have come up nice and shiny!

The next step is to order up the pistons and rods which will be over the next few weeks.

Thanks for the comments. :)

Robbie - no its not going to be anywhere near as crazy as Don's hopefully just a well thought out, reliable fast road car with scope for trackdays and lots more miles. :)

Alright so a small update today. :)

The block has been cleaned and had the main and big end shells measured up for it.

Image

The crank has also been straightened and polished.

I've also ordered the pistons and rods today although there is a little bit of a wait for those. I have chosen the CP pistons in an 86.25mm size and the Carrillo Rods in the Pro-H spec.

Not cheap but should be pretty strong and well able to cope with my power goals.

Hi Sunny,

The pics should work now.

Yes I ordered them from Fensport as well. I went for the 9:1 CR - this should give a CR of 8.6:1 in combination with a 1mm head gasket, thats according to the information on Kris's website.

Goals are for around 360BHP with 300+lbft nothing too dramatic, but I want it to be reliable and able to take more power should I decide to in the future.

nice, will be more than reliable on those parts!!

i know Tim uses CP pistons for his builds and one mr2 engine he built is still running 700bhp 3 years after it was built.

and carillo and crower rods are superb so no problems there, good choice indeed!

Hi,

thants great, so the engine should be more then able to run more if you want it anytime :)

ain't it 9:1 with a 1mm headgasket? why becomes it so much lower?

Hi Sunny,

I was going on some information I found in this thread:

http://gt4dc.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=50

CP
Part No - SC7450
86.5mm
CR - 8.6 *
Gasket - 1.0mm *
Weight - 323g

* - CP list the piston as a 9.0:1 CR. CP have verified that using a 1.0mm gasket an 8.6:1 CR will be obtained.
