Bit of an update, had a fair bit of progress.

Got the cam cover off - the head looks to be in generally good condition, to my untrained eye it doesn't look like there is too much wear to the camshafts - I'm going to have the head refurbished in anycase:

Managed to get the cylinder head of, looks like a non-standard head gasket to me although I can't be sure:

The bores don't look too bad - there doesn't appear to be any scoring as such but there is what I think is glazing, hopefully just a hone will be required.

Any thoughts on the condition of the bores?

Another post tomorrow :)

It could be my mistake, but the camcaps are on the wrong cam and not in the propper order. "E" is exhaust cam, and on the camcaps it says "I".
I3 and I5 are next to each other. I that correct?

Doesn't sound right to me!

Checking the BGB - EG30 shows I2, I3, I4, I5 - inlet cam caps

I =- inlet and E = exhaust and they are numbered from the pulley to the dizzy .

2 . 3 . 4 . 5 look the same and No 1 is a bit bigger and houses the cam seal

they MUST be in order as it will have been line bored , you would be extreemly lucky if the cam hasnt took the bearing runners out .

oh and that HG looks stock to me ( actually no if thats a Gen3 then that is the wrong HG , it should be 4 layer steel as stock , looks like a gen 2 HG )

Thanks Welshman.

Just looked at the EPC to check and iits as folks have said - I guess we will see when the head goes to be refurbed.

Luckily this is the engine I am having built and not the one thats in the car!

Also interesting in that the head must have been played around with, and played with by monkeys!

worst case is it would need a another head , but they are cheap atm anyway lol

you would have to install the cams correctly and check with plastigauges to check clearencess and check for wear visually ..

might be lucky ..

see my comment about the HG ? stock gen 2 it looks like .

The HG is definitely metal so its not from a Gen2. I'll post up some more pics of it tomorrow.

I would check the whole head. If the camcaps are on the wrong cam, than maybe there are other mistakes made.
Someone has had the cams out. Maybe the valves are not in the original order. Ckeck if the valve seals are on the right valves. The gen 2 has brown and grey ones. I can't remember where the grey or brown ones go, but check that. They are made from different material, so important to do right. I don't know if that is the case on the gen 3.

Personally I am a little concerned by

You may get away with it but IMHO to do a proper job you need to measure for ovality & banana shaped-ness :-) A special banana shaped-ness measuring tool is only available at a decent machine shop/engine builder. Until that has been done it is a bit speculative.

I am happy to speculate that to me the bores appear to be polished (quite a lot in some instances) but no major scoring it appears.

I would therefore speculate that it will need a small rebore. You really need to get it measured to see what the minimum size piston you can use will be before you buy the pistons.

Is this engine the one that I owned and had in my garage for a while?

If so
1) no I am not the head assembly monkey before you all start :-)
2) the reported piston slap was not due to it being forged but due to wear.

I've never seen a metal head gasket leave as much mess / marking as there appears to be. May be a trick of the camera of course. I'm wondering if they've put hylomar or similar on.
Normally with st205 a quick wipe of both faces with a rag is enough.
