Post subject:  What Clutch should i buy? £310 to spend?

hi all

i have a 1991 gt4 and the clutch has been slipping for quite a few months and now i can finally buy a new one but im not sure which one to buy

firstly the car is running at around 250bhp

it has

front mounted intercooler

fuel management system

dump valve

boost set to 1.1 bar

so i want a decent clutch as im going to be doing more upgrades to the car over the next 18 months

my budget is £310

ive seen some good ones on ebay but thought i would check out this forum first to see what you guys say

many thanks

paul

Not sure how much a genuine item is but they are good if you dont constantly launch the car

had a clutch masters fx300, it only did 40K on the road. its release bearing failed on me.

whatever clutch you get, put a genuine toyota release bearing to it.

If you're not dragging the car then fit a 205 clutch

ok thanks for the replies

so are you saying that a standard 205 clutch would be better to buy than a exedy racing clutch?

also do you know the best places in the uk to order gt4 clutches from?

thanks

paul

I would also recommend an OEM ST205 clutch. Worked well in my 330bhp Four. Clutch and release bearings can be sourced here: http://www.tcbparts.co.uk/

Toyota "aisin" brand is OEM and organic material / full face clutch plate . good for up to 320 ft lbs & 100,000 miles if driven with mechanical sympathy

"exedy" race is likely to be a cerametallic puck type clutch, holds more torque on launching but will wear out within 20 - 40,000 miles

exedy also do cheaper organic clutches similar to OEM

nb: mr2 turbo clutches also fit: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trkpa ... p=15&_sc=1

ok thanks gary

i did see those f1 clutches but they look a bit tacky

this is the one ive been looking at

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXEDY-RACING- ... 5642cc6e4e

its good for 300 ft/lbs according to the guy i just spoke to

but not sure if this will be enough when i start tuning it up more though

That exedy unit is well over priced in my opinion for a stockish replacement organic unit, and the same identical unit is available here for £25 less: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Exedy-Organic ... 0853423185

however, i'd still rather buy genuine Toyota / Aisin for less money or use the F1 racing.

..and to reiterate those organic type clutches will not tolerate drag launches, the torque / loading will cause them to slip and smell bad. .... but they do last along time under normal driving in town , stop. go. traffic etc

Fyi - Dunno if your dealers also sell Toyota Optifit parts as they do over here, but I'd stay away from those. It's a cheapo special series of parts that isn't worth the Toyota badge imo, go for Toyota Genuine Parts as they are also genuine Toyota quality.

hi gary

the problem is those f1 clutches on ebay, even the stage 2 one can only take 290bhp and i have intentions of taking mine over that kind of power

so those f1 clutches dont seem like a good idea

also i cant see a standard toyota clutch taking 300 bhp either

how about this bad boy

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/F1-RACING-STA ... 4aa845fe07

its good for 370 ft/lbs = 390 bhp

thats more like it....

are these f1 clutches actually good then gary?

if anyone else have used these f1 clutches i would be interested to hear what you have to say about them

thanks

paul
