Post subject: | Powdercoat or Paint? |
Hi Folks, I am just about to start refurbishing my rear subframe and arms. I was going to have these powdercoated and probably still will but I came across this POR15 paint that is designed for chassis and has good write ups. http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint/por15-paints/grey-por15-por-starter-kit.html Has anyone had any experience of this? Cheers, Mike |

I've bought some POR15 pre-treatment which is supposed to nuke any corrosion. Following up with etch-primer prior to final colour coat. Test subject are the C-One ARB's I got from Muddy. They were quite rusty. I've really gone to town stripping them back to bright metal with an 80grit flap wheel ![]() |

Have you considered having the subframe/arms hot-dipped galvanized? You could paint afterwards or even powder paint. Unpainted HD galv will last 20 years and IIRC powder painted HD galv has a life expectancy of around 50 years. IIRC HD galv is around £1/KG of item and ideally get a load of stuff down together. Powder coat is no better than paint for protection and as soon as it comes off you will have bare metal. |

I used this stuff - FE-123 http://www.rust.co.uk/rust-converters.cfm Also my subframes, control arms, etc on the track build are powder-coated. |

I hadn't considered galvanizing, although a cursory glance through Google looks like there are not that many places that offer the process? |

No there isn't many places. Have you got any pics of the rear subframe? One thing that does cause issues with hot dipped is if you have sealed voids - If so it may need holes drilling to avoid internal pressures building up and blowing teh subframe apart during dipping! The good point is that it will then get galvanised internally. I will probably look at galvanising mine then etch priming and then painting. It may be OTT and will probably outlast us both but powder painting could just be covering over a subframe that is rusting inside out. |

Ifs well vented and I suspect was originally electroferetic dipped or something similar in period I'd powdercoat, stonechip then paint |

Agree with JP's comments, with a subframe if you want to do a proper job its important to kill any internal corrosion. I'd want to acid dip and neutralise then acid etch and powder coat. Alternatively, do like Steve, strip with NitroMors then acid etch and several coats of paint followed by underseal to protect from stone chip damage. Cheaper but not so pretty, but as its out of sight do you mind? A couple of POR15 products I got from LB Restoration to prep bare steel. Marine Clean ![]() Prep & Ready ![]() It's well worth expending a bit of elbow grease to get the best possible surface for the etch primer, paint etc. The flap wheel abrasive does a great job of removing the quite deeply pitted corrosion but I wouldn't want to have to do that on a full subframe ST205 C-One Front ARB 18mm ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
