Hey all, I haven't found the car yet but have already started planning my modifications. One of those being a different turbo with a more aggressive power delivery at higher rpm. So I am thinking a gt2871 and want to run it at around 1.2 bar. While looking around and seeing many fro nearly a grand or more I found this and a couple others like it

What's the deal with them? Is it a POS that will rip itself to pieces within a week or just a bargain?

Real Garrett GT2871 = good choice for a daily driver, possibly a little small

Fake Chinese Gallett GT2871 = risky choice for Jacuzzi bubble making

Old saying....
If it looks to good to be true it probably is ;)

cheap garretts usually will destroy themselves, get real units or not at all is the usual opinion.

as above, if its too good to be true, it is

Cheers guys! What kind of turbo would you recommend for a reliable 350-420bhp? Maybe a gt3071?

Garrett gt3071 or the Borg warner equivalent

But I have to ask, if a 200 quid turbo looks attractive have you costed out the whole build. The turbo is one of many 4 figure bills that you'll get building a car of that level

When it comes to turbo's. Personally I'd buy an old one for a fraction of the cost price then have it rebuilt. Which will still cost less than a brand new one.

Yea have considered all the costs, power is last on my list anyway, chassis set up and weight reduction first! Besides if I buy the parts I can save a lot of hassle by doing the set up all at once and not worrying about old parts failing due to uprated ones being able to handle more force. Cheap turbo was more of a curiosity, with the centrifugal forces at work I would never consider anything cheap and cheerful

An excellent plan of action Watson

EBay is generally my last point of call in desperation. Most new stuff on there can be bought cheaper online anyway

Look to the US at the moment but don't dismiss the UK as taxes and import duty are a killer

GT2871 too small... GT3071 is a good choice for 350-450... or possibly more!

A GTX3071 would spool from about 3,000rpm compared to the GT3071 at ~3,800rpm. The 'X' indicates a lighter billet compressor wheel. This was Garrett's response to the Borg Warner turbo which was a bit of a trend setter.

I made a mistake by buying my turbo too early in my track toy build. I could have gone for a GTX3582 which would spool from ~3,800rpm
