Interesting to see that RacerXFabrication link posted by ST185Pinjo on the Inlet Plenum thread. They offer a coil on plug conversion kit based on the COP from the Toyota 1ZZ-FE engine.

The one thing that's not entirely clear to me is whether this is designed to allow the 1ZZ ignition system to fit on a 3S-GTE? The web site lists an MR2/Celica with a choice of Gen 2 or 3. I know the US got the Alltrac with the Gen 2 engine but I didn't think they got the Gen 3?

One of the problems fitting COP on a Gen 3 3S-GTE is there are no way of securing them to the cam cover. The Gen 4 3S-GTE Caldina ST215 cam cover has provision for this but I believe there are other problems fitting this cam cover to a Gen 3 3S-GTE?

The web site shows a 1ZZ COP 'valve cover adapter plate' which I am wondering is a solution to this problem, although there are only 3 holes :?

Would sir like me to bring the OEM ST215 crank sprocket to the curry meet next week?( assuming I can find it)

I can't see much point in an adapter plate when Carribean Bob is waiting in the wings

It would be good if you could bring your OEM ST215 crank sprocket, COP and other associated bits up on Friday for comparison. Jon has made up a slightly modified copy of the crank trigger kit that JP lent me. I picked this up from Jon recently and was planning on returning it to JP at the curry meet.

True, should be easy enough to make something up to do the job. Would still like to get my mitts on an ST215 Caldina cam cover though so I can see what mods are required to get it to fit

Thanks to Steve lending me the ST215 Caldina cam cover I was able to compare against the ST205 using the ST215 Coil on Plugs.

It was tricky to confirm if the COP was seating properly on the spark plug. I am used to the plug leads 'hard docking' with the top of the plugs but with these its more like a 'soft dock'. I tried removing the rubber seal from the top of COP but that made little difference. The rubber 'socket' on the end of the COP has a spring so the design doesn't really lend itself to a feeling of positively engaging with the top of the plug.

The upshot of this was the finding that it is absolutely essential to screw the COP onto the cam cover using the offset mounting bracket at the top of the COP. I tried to remove the dizzy drive so I could fit the Caldina cam cover but despite using the correct tool the star socket screws rounded (grrrr...) so I was forced to abandon that idea. In the end I simply inserted the COP into each of the cam covers and compared the exposed length below the gasket level. It was identical which means I can use the ST205 cam cover with an adaptor plate to allow the COPS to be screwed down.

People may ask why I had to do this as all the info is available on the interweb but I wanted to be sure. There's so much misinformation out there you can't be too careful!

ST215 Caldina Coil on Plug Part No: 90919-02227. The 1ZZ-FE COP's are the same dimensions are Part No. 90919-02239

The five connectors indicate that the coil has a built in igniter however you have to have an ECU that can drive the COP's directly. Most of the bigger names like Autronic, MoTeC etc. have this facility. The Apexi PFC can't tho.

The 1ZZ-FE Denso COP's seem to be a popular upgrade choice. They are reputed to be able to handle power outputs up to 700bhp.

There is some useful information on the MoTeC forum here: http://www.motec.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=374
Includes useful info such as the dwell/voltage settings to use on the ECU and part nos. for the connectors.

It's good there is so much info available so it looks pretty straightforward to do the conversion.

Don,
Did I lend you my 1ZZ COPs? I think that is what they are from - I will check part numbers when I get home if they are any use to you for mock-up purposes?

Some useful research, thanks Don.

Just to add some further research on the electrical side (so I can ensure ECU compatibility) of the 1zz

Coil Pin Out
1.ground
2.trigger
3.tach
4.+12V

Not found any 'reliable' spec on driving them, but looking round the megasquirt forum it would appear to be a 5V pulse the same as the standard 3s igniter takes (drive high to charge coil, take low to fire spark)

Another bit of googling would suggest that the ST215 COP is the same.

A bit more ggogling.

ST215 coils:

http://www.mrm-racing.se/forum/showthread.php?t=1652

Take trigger line high for dwell time, spark on negative edge. Dwell times as follows:

8V 6.3 ms
9V 5.3 ms
10V 4.4 ms
11V 3.8 ms
12V 3.2 ms
13V 2.7 ms
14V 2.4 ms
15V 2.2 ms

Re. 1zz-FE (and others)

Here are the Toyota part numbers for the 1ZZ-FE coil pack connectors:

! x Connector: 90980-11885
Pins (x4): 82998-12440
Toyota connector pins with 160mm wire - Toyota P/N 82998-12340 (USD $4.43 each)
I have not used these, so I do not know how many are required - likely 4 per.

The dwell should be set as follows:
8V 6.3 ms
9V 5.3 ms
10V 4.4 ms
11V 3.8 ms
12V 3.2 ms
13V 2.7 ms
14V 2.4 ms
15V 2.2 ms

90919-02230 GXE10 Altezza AS200/Lexus IS200 1GFE vvt-i
90919-02239 ZZE120 Corolla 1ZZFE
90919-02240 NZE121 Corolla 2NZFE
90919-02236 SXE10 Altezza RS200 3SGE Beams dual vvt-i

Other coils that I have used a bit which aren't pictured are 2AZFE Camry and 1NZFE. Both of these are longer types, whcih are useful in certain motor like porsches and jags where you need extra reach. Similar in length to the GXE10 ones pictured above.

These coils have the igniter built in. This igniter fires on the falling edge of a 5V square wave. Dwell times between 2 and 3 msec work fine. They are extremely rugged and reliable (not including a few recallss etc Toyota conducted, which I believe were all to do with Indonesian made coils, not denso Japan).

If you have a set of 1ZZ-FE Denso COP's P/N: 90919-02239 I could borrow for confirmation that would be great JP :)

Edit: but i'm not sure that stock intercooler will fit on these coils...
