Got my oil cooler and thermostat fitted and just want to confirm that my pressure/temp sender are in the hot leg(before cooler) rather than after.

Can anyone confirm the direction oil flows through the filter, am I right in thinking it comes out through the centre, flows through the filter before returning to the block outside the centre thread??

Cheers guys

Marcus

According to the oil flow diagram its actually the other way round - in through the outside and back to the engine via the centre:

Thanks to Gary for the picture.

the reason I wasnt sure is because with the thermostatic sandwich plate fitted, my temp is around 70ish degrees. The thermostat is supposed to control at 80 degrees. Because it seems that Im actually monitoring return temps from the cooler, rather than supply temps, that 70ish degrees seems about right. Shame I havent got 2 senders, would be interesting to compare supply/return temps to work out efficiency of the system.

Seems I will have to be swapping hoses around in the near future.

Yeah you might want to check the pipe orientations. One thing to consider that I've found that even though the thermostat might be 80 degrees there will still be a small amount of flow through the stat below that temperature. If the weather is really cold it can be enough to keep the oil colder than the stat temperature.

I had this problem on a trip up to Norwich once in freezing rain in the winter, in 5th at 70 mph the oil was struggling to get over 50 degrees, I ended up doing the whole journey in 4th gear just to keep some temperature in the oil.

Marcus, where exactly is your oil temperature sensor located? The best place is in the sump as that is where the oil temperature is the highest.

Nitpicking I know but........
Technically it's possibly at its hottest after the oil pump. It certainly isn't likely to get colder being thrashed about and pressurised by the pump but I have no idea what effect conductive cooling might have before it arrives at the pump
It might even be hotter on entry to the doughnut as it passes through the block to get there

From memory speaking to think automotive, the 80 degrees one's start to open at 68. I opted for one 90 degrees one, which is fully open at 90, starts to open at 78 ( to prevent the problem Mike mentioned).

To be even more nitpicking the peak oil temps are likely to be where the oil squirts hit the underside of the piston  I can't imagine anywhere hotter in the engine!

Good luck fitting the sensor

I suspect that there's also a permanent bleed to prevent airlock as per the water thermostat

That is interesting info on the higher temperature stat Dan.

Is there a part number for this - I can't find any reference to it in the ThinkAuto catalogue.

Don, the temp sensor is currently located inbetween the mocal sandwich plate and cooler itself (seemingly in the return pipe)

Its a simple enough task to swap the direction of flow through the cooler though, so I dont even have to move the temp sender.

For my needs, placing the sender in the supply to the cooler, inbetween the sandwich plate and radiator will suffice.

Placing the sender in the sump will be where it goes ultimately, however it will have to wait until I have a reason to remove the sump from the block anyway.

Cheers

Marcus - I had my sensor in the cooler supply pipe for a long time, it gives perfectly usable information in that position.

You just typically don't get a lot of warm-up information, but as soon as the stat starts opening its fine.

I can't see the oil temp there being that much different from the sump.

On my build I have now mounted the sensor in the sump but thats only because I was building the whole engine up and its easy to do.

seem to be fine in line with the cooler. just drove back to base and the return temp back to the sandwich plate sat around 72-74c for 3 hours on the motorway, im happy enough with that

I dealt with them over the phone so might be something you have to ask for.

I'll dig out the invoice and check if anything was mentioned on there.
