Post subject:  FMIC Question

Why do all FMIC setups use stainless or ally (i'm taking about the pipework)
Why not use samco hosing or cheaper equivalent?

Yes, I can see the appeal to the eye, but that's it?

I would like to have a setup done quick and am thinking, whats wrong with silicon and or rubber (not sure what material it is) piping???

cheers

Aluminium pipe is a lot cheaper than silicon, it won't bend, melt or flex like silicon.

If you did this (and I don't suggest you do) you'd still need metal connectors and clamps for the bends.

Hi,

what will a rubber/silicone do under pressure and negativ pressure......... :)

use as much pipe as possible and just use a rubber to compensate motion and to do a connection

I think this could be quite an amusing project to use samco hose. Please video for our entertainment! Even better than the guy who fitted a header tank without a pressure cap. Time for me to put the kettle on.......

as sunny said the whole setup may collapse under vaccum.

20psi x lots of square inches. I have a vision of a Celica floating above the traffic on a samco balloon.

seriously though, after turbo should be mostly pressure, which will hold the pipe open, especially at high flow rates. I can forsee a situation where.nailing the loud pedal after a period of overrun at high rpm will suck the pipe shut which will even prevent the turbo spooing to blow it back open.

Really want to go down FMIC route but dont want to spend loads....
what do I do???

Ideally, I would buy the core first, save then buy pipes to suit..

Doing it in Samco will cost double what it costs in hard pipes - ask Gary, his original FMIC on his st165 was all done in Samco with joiners and I believe it cost him a pretty penny at the time.

Also every joiner is a weak point and potential boost leak location, if you did it all in silicone you would have 20+ possible boost leak locations, whereas a good hard pipe kit will only have 4 - turbo joiner, throttle body joiner and 2 intercooler joiners.

Also silicone joins disrupt flow a lot more than a smooth metal pipe.

So basically I can't see any reason why you would want to do it, I don't think there are any plus points!

If you want a cheap kit I have a spare Evo 6 core and a brand new set of the eBay st205 pipe kits, plus a load of extra pipes and joiners at my folks place near Sturninster Newton - you can have it all in the cheap as I don't need it and its just getting in the way.

as all above mate, if going fmic do it right or you might be less efficient than the cc.
