The reason for doing this is so the engine bearings don't run dry on initial start up. The assembly 'slime' Martin refers to is a help but it could still take anything up to 30 seconds for oil pressure to rise when you start the engine for the fidst time. Even in this short space of time its possible to damage the bearings in both the engine and turbo. There have been numerous examples over the years where enthusiastic owners have rebuilt their 3S-GTE then suffered engine or turbo failure shortly after. It transpired afterwards they hadn't primed the oil system. While this might not have been the sole cause of failure it most certainly didn't help.
