..how do you get the cigarette lighter element out of the dashboard plastics?! I want to spray/dip the dash parts but cannot for the life of me unclip it without what looks like cracking it open...!

I assume you have the panel complete with lighter socket off the car? I don't have the parts in front of me but from memory if you look at the back of the socket you will see there is a sleeve and an outer section. You have to separate them and then you can remove the outer section from the panel. It's difficult to describe but if you have the panel and socket in front of you it should make more sense!

Going to try again tomorrow, had the whole thing out and indoors but nothing on it would budge and no clips would move.

This is it, the grey bits sticking out refuse to budge, they won't go in. Cant move any other bits either like the green parts.

With reference to your pic:
On the top right of the grey housing you will see a 'ramp'. From memory I rotated this until it aligned to the movable tab at top left on the black ''collar'.
I'll try and dig out the components so I can re-assemble them and give you more specific guidance if the tip above doesn't work.

Actually when I posted the pic up I looked at that and thought 'ahhhhh!' I think you are right...will have another go at that.

About the 5th time I have removed that piece of trim, after installed all the bits and bobs last week
