Thought some of you may be interested in this.

Decided to sacrifice my clock and install an Arduino-based microcontroller in its place, primarily to allow accurate measurement of the effect of aerodynamic modificaitons I have planned for the future via the monitoring of fuel consumption while at a constant speed.

Bit of background on Arduino: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arduino

My install:

I tried to get it looking like it belongs.

Aside from the various outputs related to fuel consumption It can display standard stuff such as speed/distance, rpm, voltage & 400m time/trap speed, and will be as accurate as the VSS signal resolution allows so far better than any GPS-based unit.

Pretty much finished calibrating it now.

Unrelated to the above here is a shot of my stealth oil temperature & boost gauges :p

Very nice indeed! Scale of the boost meter is still useless though?

I started a similar thing about 3 yrs ago.... Not quite finished it. But that's par for the course at my speed doing things on my car !

Never thought about locating in the clock hole. I was going for the spare slot with the stereo. But a larger 20x4 screen being about 145mm wide.
