Post subject:  what turbo?

Right guys and girls I'm looking to get my st185 back in shape and want 300bhp... So could use some advice on what turbo would be advisable? Plan to have electronic boost controller so I can run .8 and 1 bar but would like room for expanding the power when I forge the internals... So what you all reckon?

Turbo Technics S148 hybrid with single waste gate.

If you do a search on here I think you will find the overwhelming response will be the Turbo Technics S148, preferably the earlier model with the single wastegate if you can find one. Minimal boost creep compared to most other uprated turbos and good for up to 380bhp.

Stock Toyota
A ct26 will get you there but will need a bit of pushing
A ct20 will do that easily

Agree the CT20 would do 300bhp but not sure for how long as the standard thrust bearings are prone to short life if you up the boost with an EBC.

For 300 I think I would still stick with Toyota parts. The stock ct26 would work and allow funds to be diverted to the ecu and headgasket fund. It's all very well slapping a big turbo on but the 185 will struggle to reach 300hp safely and if it does you are into paper gasket failure territory....

My Ct20 did 70 k km at 1.15 Bar boost and still was fine. Only took it out to replace it by an custom made upgraded CT20 with an Borg Warner K24 compressor wheel.

Good call on the stock turbo. The ST185 doesn't seem to suffer from boost creep as much as the ST205 so the waste gate probably not so much of an issue.

i'm now onto 140,000miles..... turbo as of yet has never been off (touch wood) and run many many trackdays in its time at 1.15bar.

Road use she sees mainly .9-1bar

Thanks guys! (and possibly girls) will look into the turbo technics and ct20 for sure, just worried about pushing the ct26 to over 1 bar in case it rips itself to pieces...

My CS ct26 ( larger compressor wheel than normal ct26 ) when it failed at 253k miles only bent turbine blades. And then the shaft. Very clean failure IMO. It allowed me to drive 55 miles back home.... Was a nice smoke screen behind me though !

Defo a stock ct20b, cheap and readily available, proven to make 300bhp on tons of cars, in fact some have run them at alot more.

If your goal is only 300 then there is no need to spend 2x plus as much on a hybrid.

P.S. turbo technics S148 is good for more than the 380bhp advised by the manufacturer ;)

Hi,what is the boost of the ct20b mounted in st185? high boost (1,1bar) at 6700-7000rpm its posible?

The stock cams and turbo would be outside their efficiency range at that rpm. If you let us know what your goals are for the car we can advise. Engine mods, horsepower and torque, road and/or track use etc. etc.
