What is the general consensus on these things? Good at keeping the dirt off? Or good at trapping the dirt in?

As I have just purchased some BC coilovers I want to afford them the maximum protection possible so as well as painting the bits that usually corrode I want to protect them from road dirt.

Good idea or not?

I'd say just good regular washing. One thing on the top end of the front spring mount is a bearing, make sure its a rubber seal type and when washing the car rinse well to stop dirt / salt / whatever muck sitting and rusting the metal cage seal my BC kit had fitted.

I was thinking of doing the same with the TEIN suspension I have waiting to fit on my 'stock' ST205. The OEM struts have a much harder wearing finish than the TRD struts I used to have. The KYB's were better and almost on a par with the OEM type. I am considering treating the paint with an abrasion and corrosion resistant clear coat.

I assume this is more for the strut piston?

Anything wrong with old motorbike fork gaitors? The Neoprene type are regularly used on motorcross bikes so I wodul say give it a go.

My understanding is that KYB make both OEM and TRD?

I am virtually certain that they do.

Doesn't mean that they use the same paint/finish however.

just going on corrosion of the strut I've had some BC's on my starlet for about 5 years now covering 75000miles, I did a revamp recently and the shocks were perfect without any corrosion. If you want to be cautious cover them in WD40.

the springs did corrode, well the powercoat had come off and a tiny bit flaking on the body of the shock but nothing serious. worked perfectly was just the powdercoat flaking.

I was happy surprised for 75000miles use.
