hi all, ive been looking at getting a barrel chargecooler now for a while and just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with them.
the idea behind this is to remove the existing top mount and use a st215 side feed, i was looking at moving the battery to the boot and use the existing pipework/pump to run it. this would also mean no heat soak and nice and easy access to the head as and when needed.
im not looking at this as a power upgrade more of an that could be made to work well, ive started to do the odd track day and would like to keep the cooling under control any other ideas welcomed.

I have been looking at the same thing....you'd have to clock the turbo to be able to fit the pipework in, other than that i think it would be pretty straight forward, barrel charge coolers always get good reviews but i am torn between that and retaining the standard look of the normal charge cooler......looking at PWR barrel charge coolers, they are ridiculously expensive.

The only thing that is puting me off at the minute
Is the fact that the pwr company doesn't have a
Phone number to contact them on only contactable by email, this really bugs me

I emailed them today hopefully Ill get some response,
I know it's probably not the cheapest option
But I can't see it being far off of a well put together front mount, in theory I should only need the charge cooler and the header tank
Plus the pipe work making up, I've kinda spoke to mk about it roughly but I'm sure he will be up for the challenge.

Bear in mind you'll still need a decent size rad in the front of the car to get the heat away. An efficient chargecooler and tiny pre-rad will lead to hot water and high charge temps anyway. I would work on the basis of a pre-rad a similar size to a decent FMIC.

I was thinking that I'd be able to use the stock
Rad, I thought it would be fine as the original copes upto 400bhp just thought it would be upto the job as I'm not going anywhere near that sort of figure just thinking there is nothing wrong with a bit of a refresh.

Its not just power that kills the stock setup, its prolonged boost.

In theory you could run a gt35 and 600bhp through it so long as you used it for 2 minutes at a time.

Boost makes heat, prolonged boost, major heat.. then it fails

Well, this is going right out of the window,I've
Emailed twice and had no response, so I'm going to put the funds to 1 side and use what I've got and look and things a bit differently.

looking at the use of track you can take the car on track with the stock charge cooler, I used to all the time.

Just I chose to go fmic because the cc did get hot after sustained use where the front mount doesn't, the core is always cold.
Personally if I were you I would go for a good front mount core and build youreself a setup. :)

I would have a look at the RS500 FMIC and radiator setup and see what's involved in persuading it to fit. I think Edd (treacle) posted up about it on here. Very short intercooler pipework without clocking the turbo and an efficient cooling rad too. Someone on CCUK has just fitted an RS500 rad to a 185 and it solved his cooling problems on his rally 185. It does mean you need to change to a header tank setup on the water, but this is easy and very beneficial anyway.

If you want the full contact details of PWR they are at this link http://www.pwreurope.com/contact.html. To be honest when I was getting the rads fabricated for my project I discovered that PWR are completely snowed under by professional motorsport work and don't have time for one-off single car projects.

The RS500 rad is one that I like the look of and a few of us have considered going that route. The only slight downside is that having one rad in front of the other means there is an element of pre-warming so I ended up deciding to go with the Celica GTO side by side layout.

I'm sure it should be possible to space them apart a bit more, maybe even stick some slim fans between.

Ok , so after reading all the replays about the rs500 rad/intercooler I've had a look around and
It's about 7/800 for the pair the charge coolers
And all bits were around the same dot off price this is without fitting though and pipe work, I've been thinking this is around £1200 ish all in.
Does this sound about right I know it can be done cheaper but I hate paying for things twice
And with regards to cooling mods is there anything else I should be looking at?
It's not the short sprints that bother me it's the
15/20 min out on track and the wife moaning
That I need another engine that concerns me most, it's a new engine and I want to make it
Last.

I'd look into a small engine oil cooler as well. Especially for summer track days.
