Hi Everyone

As my engine is coming out as part of the work I'm doing on the CS I'm thinking of doing the following:-

Picking up a 205 engine and putting the head, inlet manifold, throttle body and Chargecooler on my CS block (forgies inside) but running as standard 185 ECU/AFM etc (for the meantime)
I used to read about this sort of thing all the time when I was more involved with the forums, so can people remind me
A) any perils and pitfalls of doing this
B) Any expected performance gains short term
C) is it a good idea? as I should be able to get one for £500 and flog a few bits off my CS (chargecooler etc)

Cheers in advance
Rick

I don't think the 205 chargecooler is any better than the CS one, so I really don't see any benefit in doing this. The only improvement is the cams, but you will lose TVIS, larger inlet porting for more power (when TVIS open), smaller inlet porting for more torque (TVIS closed). In addition you will have the following issues to deal with:

Water elbow fixings are different, 205 has different plumbing so 205 elbow not that suitable for 185 plumbing.

Inlet and exhaust manifold fixings are completely different so you will need to use 205 manifolds. 205 exhaust manifold puts turbo in a different place. 205 inlet puts throttle body in a different place (and it's larger)

Injectors are bigger - you will need to put your 185 injectors in to the 205 fuel rail to run the standard ECU.

so A - as above.
B - Very little, if any, short or long term gains. Most of the extra BHP on a 205 over a CS came from increased boost and better engine management ditching the restrictive AFM & improved map.
C - How much ? I'd be wanting a whole engine for that !!!! If I were changing, I would change the whole 205 engine and benefit from better sump / oil filter setup and a theoretical lower milage / newer engine. In practice, I'm seeing a lot more rough 205's being broken than 185's. To be honest, I would stick with a 185CS setup especially with it being a limited edition car. Fitting 205 engine or head will reduce it's future value massively.

Agree with Nibbles - keep it standard.

That is for full Engine, ECU loom & Turbo

I know what you guys are saying but I do need some more power to keep me interested, don't want to just chuck in a 205 engine that i don't know much about when mine currently only has 15k on it since rebuild hmmm

As I said, there is very little difference in the 2 as a base for modification.

The CS was more powerful than the base 185 as standard, with a bigger turbo - same size as 205 - and less safety margin on fuelling and ignition, presumably as a result of better chargecooling.

A CS should be safe to run the same boost as a 205. If you want more still, consider a cam upgrade, either 205 cams or go for HKS 264.
The big limiting factor is injector size, however once you run out of puff from 440cc injectors, you are probably on borrowed time with standard pistons anyway. If you go for bigger injectors, you'd need an aftermarket ECU which would then allow you to do away with the AFM.

Well then as said better to just start modifying your CS - your not going to gain anything by messing around with 205 bits, better put the £500 towards something like an ECU.

I'm not on standard pistons I have JE's in hence why I'm reluctant to change the block,I will just overhaul the head this time then, maybe new cams, and look at the ECU/injector upgrades later- I have much more bodywork/suspension issues to worry about until then
Thanks for your input, helped me make a decision there :D

Still living at Barton on Humber Rick?

I had my CS head re built,
St205 cams and 1mm oversize valves,
the old valves were cream crackered

All controlled by a Motec
Fuel system upgraded as well
Including 800cc injectors
Let's see what Adrian at Fensport makes of it tomorrow

Stephen

Never was in Barton Stephen, but not far away about 20 miles so yep same place, same motor - although I run a porker boxster S now, looks like your CS has has more TLC than mine in the last few years but that's about to change. Be good to hear how you get on at Fensport

About 360-380bhp
and about 350ib-ft torque today.

Adrian took me out in a turbo gt86 today
which felt like an oem car.
Maybe not as much power as the porker s,
but maybe as much fun?

Enjoying my non turbo gt86

Stephen
