Post subject:  Recommendations for a custom exhaust company in Surrey?

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a 2.5 inch cat back system in the near future and would more than likely end up getting a custom one.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of any places around Surrey and what ones you'd recommend please?

Thanks very much!

Matt.

Any particular reason you want a custom system? It's likely to prove more expensive than simply buying an off the shelf system. I ran a 70mm Blitz Nur SpecR for many years and was very happy with it. It comes with a removable baffle for the tail pipe. Useful if you want to keep under 98db on track days :)

Blitz nur spec r also gets my vote, sounds superb too.

Mine is a Aussie 3" ceramic coated down pipe
3" TBDevelopments made stainless mid / flexi pipe
Blitz Nur Spec -R cat back system

Sounds absolutely epic, albiet a bit too loud, only just registers under noise limits on track, last trackday we hit 104.7DB... and that was at slightly under 4k revs too. :(

I ran an HKS SILENT HI-POWER EXHAUST SYSTEM.
Not cheap mind you:

Not too loud and superb quality.

Thanks guys!

I'm looking at a custom one as I'd like a 2.5 inch system to eliminate (or try) any subframe knocking etc. I'm looking for an exhaust that isn't boomy on long journeys too. I currently have the Blitz Nur Spec S backbox and find this is pretty uncomfortable on long journeys.

That HKS Silent Power system might be quite nice though or maybe the Mongoose cat back system, for an off the shelf system?

If you find the blitz back box only in the spec s not too your taste then the spec r most definately isn't!! :D haha

I would say go with the mongoose, its cheap and also fits well enough and isnt all that loud either. :)

On the mongoose a chap over on the OC just had a very bad experience with mongoose although I've no idea how competent the installers were.

Not in Surrey but Hayward and Scott make very nice exhausts and are not too far away. Not cheap though.

ah thats odd, mind you the last mongoose I saw was over 2 years ago, our mate phil had one on his car and fitted great with no bangs etc..

In saying that my 3" system fits like a glove but then tim buit the mid / flexi pipes on the car and is a beaut, and the nur spec always seems to fit right, but it should at the price for how little of the system you get!

THey should be done on the trade descriptions for the "cat back" spec!!!

I found my Blitz system was OK on noise with the restrictor fitted in the silencer tail pipe. No booming sound at all :) fitted fine and didn't knock against the subframe or chassis. Also had a 3" Hayward & Scott downpipe and front pipe plus flexi section. Good quality but not cheap and needs 'customising' with a large heavy mallet so it clears the subframe

I think the system on my 205 is a mongoose. Quite a pleasant noise when opened up but not overpowering on long trips. I a.m half deaf though.

Thanks guys! It's good to get views on the options available... Like Sirius said about the chap on the OC having issues with a few brand new Mongoose systems is what put me off a bit, but then again it could well just be a one off. It sounds like the Mongoose system would be ideal as I don't plan on decatting the car, so in theory it should fit nicely.

I did consider the Blitz R like suggested, but always ruled it out as I thought it'd be even noiser than my S, but the bung idea sounds like it could be a winner. But being a 3" system it can lead to boost creep or is it fuel cut?

The quality of the hayward and scott system is very good but I believe that the cost now is around £1500 including flexi or 3 times the price for a mongoose or blueflame (that also includes the flexi section). The Blitz does not include the flexi so factor in another £300 odd for a Aussie Exhaust Flexi or a mongoose flexi (assuming you could still get one!)

Having tried/owned a powerflow, mongoose, Hayward & Scott and full Aussie exhaust system I would look at the Mongoose/blueflame again for moderate power goals and only seek out a full 3" system is pushing 350bhp or above.

At present my St185 runs a mongoose and it is much better quality than the powerflow I had years back.

as above, the blitz spec r is loud, it does have a bung but looks a bit stupid with it in position and kind of goes against the point of having a nur spec in the first place, they are meant to sound brash and loud. haha :)

Mongoose sounds like it would suit your needs, it goes all the way to the cat for half the price of a nur spec and isnt too intrusive.

Out of interest, what are the issues with the mongoose ? Is it being mated to original cat or downpipe & is it this at fault.

If it's just fitment issues, these are usually solved with a cut & weld or 2 - still far less than the number involved with making a custom system as that is all cuts & welds.

All things tend to warp when repeatedly heat cycled up to the temperatures involved with a turbo - including the standard manifolds, cat etc. Fitment issues are inevitable without plenty of 'give' in the joints.
