A couple of questions about steering wheels, as I'm finding that the standard one is just a bit too close to my knees when braking / using the clutch while driving on the track.

1. How quickly can you swap them over? (using standard fitment)
2. Can you just disconnect the wiring for the airbag? (quickly and easily!)
3. Anyone got any experience using a smaller wheel?

I was thinking of getting a smaller diameter (280mm or 290mm) wheel with a slight dish and swapping it over for track days, then swapping back to the standard one for road driving because it (a) has an airbag and (b) I can put up with it being close to my knees when driving on the road.

I take it you have the wheel at the highest setting?

May be a stupid question, but I only found out it was adjustable when I was GT4'ing,and taking the trim off around the steering wheel :-(

Good point Phil!

I was amazed to find a few years ago when I took a Porsche 911RS for a test drive that the steering wheel was fixed. For circa £50k I'd expect everything to be adjustable!

Yes - I've tried using the vertical adjustment of the wheel, but I'm still not happy with the position. Might have to get hold of a smaller diameter dished wheel and just give it a go!

Might be worth dropping treacle a line, I know he has done this on his car.

Yes - that's a good idea, I know that Edd was running a dished wheel.

Depending how old Your GT Four is it may have not even a single cable connected to the airbag. The cars with only a driver airbag had a mechanic driven one. Only the facelift models with passenger airbag had electronic driven ones and had a control light in the instument cluster.

The mechanic one are easy to remove.

I use a 300mm Momo in my Carlos Sainz but will replace it by a 350mm one this year. The 300mm one is too small and I need too much force for steering on track and to react against bumbs from the wheels while harsh driving on bad roads.

Thanks XLarge - that's just the information that I'm looking for. I have a late car so probably going to be wired not mechanical, and sounds like you have found the steering too heavy with the smaller diameter wheel. Were you using the car on tarmac track or something like rally cross?

I use it for spirited road driving and race track driving. Mostly Nürburgring and Hockenheim.
