I have come across a strange problem on Ezzy's rebuild. 2 of the pistons are fouling on the oil squirters at bottom dead centre. Spot the witness mark on the piston.

If I didn't know better, I'd think I put the pistons in the wrong way round as the squirter should be spraying into the central area to lubricate the little end and cool the piston crown.
Maybe I did put the pistons in the wrong way round, but the bigger valve cutouts are on the intake side.

Measuring this piston and a standard piston, the gudgeon pin is closer to the side with the bigger valve cutouts in both cases. This seems wrong to me as I thought the offest was to reduce conrod angle on the power stroke - this would increase it unless I'm having a funny 5 minutes.

Question is, what do I do about it ?
1. Machine the piston slightly to remove the interference and live with the oil not squirting at the crown. (I don't think so :D )
2. Machine bigger valve cutouts in the other side of the piston and turn it round. (I need to get my head straight about the piston offset. Been a bad day)
3. Phone call to Trents in the morning and clear all my cars out, then go back to buying new cars and save a fortune.
4. Any ideas ? Bending squirters further in isn't an option as they'll foul the rods. Maybe lengthening to the other side.

p.s. A picture of the whole piston underside showing the asymetric design.

Certainly doesn't look right. Are they the correct pistons for a 3S-GTE? We know that JE have had some quality issues in the past so maybe its a duff batch of pistons?

"adjust" the squirter out of the way?

I have butchered the pistons in the end, using a countersink bit in the mill to put an angled notch to deflect the oil jet onto the central region.

Not ideal, but I'm not planning on running big power on this engine so I'm mainly worried about getting oil to the little end for lubrication.

I thought this was safer than butchering the jets as I have no easy means to check they are still working effectively.

Hi Chris, this was also recently documented on the OC

I had the same proble. The new Je pistons are different and in fact hit with squirters. I spoke with Je and they tell me that bend a little squirters. before pistons were round at the bottom and not beaten.

Yes. Only need bend aproximately 1mm. I run about 11.000 kilometers and no problem.

The witness marks on my pistons are right on the outside of the web, as cen be seen in the photo. This would require a bend much greater than 1mm and I would be nervous about kinking the pipe. Also, as can be seen in the second photo, the squirters are right on the edge of the area occupied buy the conrod, it would need careful checking that the conrod would clear at all points.

Thanks for posting Gary, good to know I'm not going daft :D

I agree.

I'll never buy or reccomend JE again. This is a design balls up beyond belief.

Very poor show from JE. Thank goodness we have CP (Pankl) supplying good quality pistons for the 3S-GTE :)

I'm running JE in mine and I have to say from memory they look nothing like mine, ill try and dig some pictures out but I'm pretty certain they are fully skirted with a cut out for the oil squirter and I've had no issues. Dorris

I also have a set of JE pistons looking just like that from an old engine. Sadly they are +.25 and I need +.5 for this engine.

Apparently they re-designed them and these are the 'new improved' design.

I will run my modified ones until something goes pop then it's weigh in time for that block & pistons and builf up another one with a smaller bore.
