Here we go again

So, after looking at the work done by Tim on Treacles car It has set my mind at work, the one reason I built a new charge cooler all them years ago was because the wasnt an easily available short route for FMIC pipework and current routes all look a bit crap and heath robinson to be honest. I want my car to look standard, even though it will be far from standard I am aiming to make it look like one of those one offs that car producers do from time to time with current models.

I like the look of the RS500 radiator set up and its a good starting point, but i still think there is room for improvement.

The drawings below are my current ideas on how to layout the entire cooling system. Blue rectangles are oil coolers. the two vertical stripes are the supports I have welded in between the top cross member and the bottom cross member this will be in between the FMIC at the very front, and the main cooling radiator at the back. the largest rectangle is the FMIC and the pale greenish rectangle is the main cooling radiator. The two circles are the inlet and outlet of the FMIC

The top idea has the gearbox cooler and power steering cooler attached to this central support, the engine oil cooler will sit directly on the main radiator and fill the void between the two FMIC pipes. This would mean clocking the turbo but would give a very short pipwork route.

The second picture has the main radiator taller but narrower allowing room on the left and right to fit oil coolers with only one oil cooler needing to be attached to the central support.

The final lower idea has the FMIC inlet lower down so there is no need to clock the turbo but still allowing a short pipe route.

The main radiator I would like to keep as cross flow, but if there are good enough reasons not to I can make it vertical flowing.

How are you proposing to mount the oil rads? the first pic they are mounted on one side to your vertical support bar but there doesn't seem to be any support on the other side. The pics below show how I've mounted the gearbox and P/S coolers on my track project. You might get some ideas from that. My engine oil cooler lives behind the lower RHS wing as its a pretty bulky item. Similar position to the Ferrari 430 and Porsche 911 GTE race cars.

I must admit I prefer a diagonal setup on the FMIC as well as velocity stack type end tanks to get a better flow and cooling through the core. I'd use a hybrid of your first and third designs with extra mounts for the coolers.

My 2p!

Question:

How many oil coolers do you need and also how big/many rows will they be because to me that will effect how and where id be mounting them.

Hi Ray,

It depends on the use/output of the car.
