Post subject:  Are these Ebay radiators any good? Anyone used one?

Hello, I have been contemplating replacing my original radiator with an a new one from ebay:
Toyota celica st202 st205 gt4 3s-gte 40mm twin core alloy race cooling radiator.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-CELICA-ST202-ST205-GT4-3S-GTE-50MM-TWIN-CORE-ALLOY-RACE-COOLING-RADIATOR-/221033259082?_trksid=p2054897.l4275

The question is are they any good? I have seen one available even cheaper, "purchased brand new never fitted" type sale.
Does anyone think this kind of radiator would be a viable OEM style replacement? It maybe I just stick with my standard one, however it was blocked and fairly corroded - probably the original factory unit. Would be good to know peoples thoughts on this. If you haven't read my greetings thread, I am going for refurbishment of a neglected ST205, no real horse power gains in mind, just trying to make a reliable car out of a tired old Toyota. Thanks for any opinions/advice.

An interesting bit of research.

Seems that unless you get something very special, the standard rad. is probably the best bet.

Ahh I'm not a member of the CC (can't see past the gateway),besides I don't like those pesky 7th gens getting in the way of pure turbocharged AWD info lol, I'm somewhat of a purist. All jokes aside I am just looking for something that does the job of the OEM one, sometimes it's easier to bolt in a new part than spend hours refurbishing/cleaning the old especially if it can be had relatively cheaply. Thanks though.

I got one and still plan to fit it. The quality looks fine to me but time will tell I suppose.

Adrian Smith at Fensport ran a standard Toyota radiator in his 500+bhp Celica GT4X without any problems. An alloy rad looks nice but there's not a huge performance benefit. I'd also be wary of buying rads off fleabay as it's unlikely they have been built with a good quality core. You might find with some that the cooling is actually worse than the OEM rad!

Cheers Jon and track Toy four, this is what I'm thinking, 'fine' is ideal- if you know what I mean? I'm just looking to replace the radiator with a new standardised item. I just want cheap and functional and I have not been able to find a Toyota Standard new radiator. Also I have called TCB so many times this month I feel like a stalker, so I would like to get this sort of thing from somewhere else. Are these alloy rads worth it? I mainly ask, because every newbie is warned off cheap ebay inter cooler kits and I'm applying the same caution to these ebay radiators. Thanks

Funny enough tcb sell a good quality standard rad for the price of the ebay crab.

If you read the research, the main problem with the ebay rads is that the core is too tall and therefore the tanks too thin to flow well. This means that most of the cooling is being done by a thin vertical strip near the middle. The r&d was done by a motors port engineer building his own rally car.

Thanks nibbles, if that is the case, I will just wait till new year and get one from them, I could only see ST185 rads on the website, just don't think it's worth getting a second hand one, that's my main issue. If I can get a new part, I think it's worthwhile as nothing has really been replaced on this car for some time.

They definitely do 205 ones. We had one shipped up to a campsite in the lake district for dans car.

I'm guessing they aren't copper-cored unless genuine Toyota, though?

At the end of the day the fleabay one is cheap enough to give it a try and revert back to standard if cooling is an issue. It's a much easier job on a '205 to change the rad than most cars.

Thanks Muddy Water, my ebay searching skills are lacking, I never quite seem to find the thing I am looking for, That radiator is a bargain price. I wonder if it does the job? Certainly if it says OE, it should function as such no?
Thanks for the link anyway.

That eBay link has the same part number as the TCB website - for a fair bit less money.

One point - I am fairly certain that from the Factory the ST202 radiators and ST205 radiators are not the same, anyone confirm?

The 202 radiators are quite a bit thinner.

Avoid that ebay cheapie, I had to return one a while back, the quality of it really was rubbish.

I think I got mine from euro car parts in the end. OEM style, st205 thickness core (albeit aluminium) for around £100.
