Post subject:  Fluffy stuff under the bonnet

I have been googling and searching for threads on the under bonnet material - few threads on forums and PH all quite a few years old now with none actually having a good answer to this - but what would happen longer terms if it was removed?

Some people mentioned about bonnet discoloration, has anyone seen this happen? Various comments about rain ingress? Noise reduction, does it?

The threads I found didn't have anyone on there who had removed it and run the car for a few years without it so it was all a bit speculative...anyone actually done it?

Hi Col,

I've been running my car without the soundproofing for about 13 years now without any issues, that is including removing the tray that sits under the bonnet vent. The heat emanating from the vent in the summer time is insane, given that the 3SGTE is quite heat sensitive getting rid of any heat possible can only be a good thing. :)

Excellent cheers - it looks horrific anyway!

I'm amazed that you have a car which still has the underbonnet soundproofing and tray!

Like others I've also been running my ST205 for over ten years now less the soundproofing without any obvious adverse effect. Some people have retained the 'drip tray' which fits under the bonnet grille to keep their engine dry but this will limit extraction of hot air from the engine. It's worth re-fitting the drive belt cold air feed. I think everyone has done this. It was reputedly designed by Toyota to cure overheating and premature failure of the drive belts in the rally cars.

Thanks again guys, yes the car is quite standard with some nice modifications, I am the third owner since 1995 after a single owner in Japan and a single owner here. Nice job for the weekend pulling the fluff down. Do you have a link for refitting the drive belt feed, not heard of that before?

From memory it's secured to the soundproofing with some plastic pop-on clips. Should be pretty obvious when you remove the soundproofing. You just have to remove it from the soundproofing and fit to the now naked underside of the bonnet. The clips will be a bit loose without the soundproofing but should still do the job.

On mine, it is noticable that the bonnet paint goes dull very quickly especially in the hotter areas and needs cutting compound to get it back. Those that polish the car weekly probably wouldn't notice. ( I polish it weakly ).

I detox wash my car every couple of months, cleanse, polish then seal with a hard wax - then I wash weekly.

I binned the drip tray....it had a flattened aluminium can araldited to it to cover up a hole in the tray.

The car looked infinitely better when I binned it, I was amazed by the pillar of heat coming out of the bonnet afterwards. I use a car cover in bad weather to reduce the impact of rain etc...

However a decent tray can fetch around £20.

The drip shield does stop the turbo heatshield going rusty though. Mine is now held on with volkswagen (iirc) trim clips fitted into the bonnet. The heads on those go straight through the drip trays and I secure it with R clips. Keeps the rain out but can be removed quickly :D

Keep in stock trim for the win :)

I presume the drip shield is just a piece of black plastic that exists underneath the large vent in the middle of the bonnet...

Yes more or less, mine was grey and it looked a bit like fire retardant insulation fibre.
In summer it aids cooling to remove it, but it is worth keeping in winter, to prevent a rusting shield. However mine was trashed.
As for the other bits, I haven't yet investigated.

OK thanks, will see what it all looks like when I take off the insulation - might just remove it and go a bit creative on it with some rattle cans so it looks a bit more exciting under the bonnet vent :-)
