Post subject:  relocating gearbox oil cooler
I need to relocate this, any clues on what pipe work to use - also where have you located yours?

I presume the gearbox oil will need filling after this - where do i fill this up?

From memory the gearbox lines are 5/8 UNF, I'd use some stainless braided hose in at least 5/8 size with fittings.

http://www.thinkauto.com are good for this sort of stuff.

The gearbox is filled from a plub on the front of it, its probably best to do a complete change of the gear oil if your moving the cooler anyway. Remember that there are two drain plugs aswell. There's a decent picture somewhere on Kris and Loosey's website http://www.gtfours.co.uk

No idea on where you should put it - I guess it depends on the reason why it needs moving. On a side note - if you have a JDM car it might also be a good oppertunity to upgrade to the UK spec cooler or a similar size aftermarket item. :)

Take a look Here for pics of where Kris relo'd his to post frontmount

It's a very tight fit but fit it does

Pipe wies I can't quite remember how it happened (it was about 10pm when we got it in place LOL).
As I recall we re-used the stock connections to the Rad for their 90 bend and the connection to the cooler. If I remember rightly we cut these after the 90, flared the end then used flexi to connect back to the original pipes.

Robbie - if you turn around the stock hard gearbox lines then they have a near 90 degree bend to route them from the cooler back towards the gearbox.

Datajon came to the rescue with a flaring tool so that these could be connected onto the stock gearbox lines.

Note that the pipes shown below were cut and bent a little to get the required position...

The cooler is a bloody tight fit, and I would recommend a slightly thinner core to the next guy who does this to allow a little more room! :shock:

Looks a very tight squeeze in Kris' pic. If they are touching I'd be concerned that vibration would damage the core of the FMIC and/or the gearbox cooler/pipework. It all depends on how they are mounted relative to each other.

My thinking was to change the cooler to a standard low profile type of aftermarket motorsport cooler and remote mount it. Not sure exactly where though.

Don - the problem in reloacting the cooler is that you really want it in a direct path of some air. This limits you in where you are going to position the cooler.

The pic shows that the space is very tight, but there is a gap between the cooler and the FMIC.

Note that you will have to use solid pipework as there will not be enough room with flexi ones.

A final solution and mounting arrangement is coming...
