Are the stick on (decal) number plates on the front bumper legal or not? (goes where the toyota badge was)
Going round in circles trying to find a definitive answer.

Also, in the following picture, is the number plate legal?

Lastly, can I trim an already legal number plate top and bottom and it still be legal?

Cheers

I found refs saying plates made since a certain date have to have a BS marking. All plates need at least 1/2 inch surround of backing colour from edge to letter. And depending on vehicle min size of letters.
Along with standard letter spacing. To stop words being spelt.

In a word, no, not legal. Believe having it on the Toyota badge it's the wrong angle.

However in my experience as long as anpr cameras can still read it, police in my area at least have never had a problem. I am very aware that if they wish to pull me over they have an open invitation to do so.

poo..lol
oh well. Its just I've seen a few with small front plates and thought ahaa, what would do just nicely.
this is what I was after (although the plate I have is not the double height one)

The example is not a great one because I think you can still fit a standard plate in the space provided.. (oops, I already provided the relevant photo in the first post)

Nice. So, who told you it was just legal? Did you get pulled over by mr. plod?

My MOT guy, and also a parts place I went to after said MOT guy gave me an advisory on my rear plate.

The advisory was for the chequer pattern on the letters (kinda like a carbon fibre weave look), which apparently is not acceptable, although I read the rule as being intended for the background.

I've had the car 10 years (yikes!) with these plates on since it was imported. Never been pulled over in the near 60,000 miles I've driven it.

Incidentally, the parts guy said that if he did the rear plate to the correct standard it would have to be 2 lines of text, not the single line you can probably just make out in my sig pic. I've not replaced it yet, but will probably need to if I go back to the same garage for the next MOT!

I believe that there is a formal font size, spacing and distance to border dimensions provided to ensure it is legal. Most places will however make up a plate at a standard size which is on the large side of the regs and allows for the biggest letters/no.s combination.

You can get number plates made up to these dimensions by custom plate places on line but they are meant for "Show only" and normally do not come with the BS mark. You can get a really small no. plate if you buy the reg no. A1 :-)

Ok, what size lettering is used on your front plate? Standard size?
Also, the gap from the edge of the plate to the letter M is smaller that the gap on the top and the bottom of the letters? If so, is that part of the regs or can your plate be squished a bit more top and bottom (keeping the same size letters of course)

All the dimensions are listed here:

Somewhat bizarrely the dimensions are different for original and replacement plates! Go figure as they say in the US of A :?

whats the best way to attach front plate without surround? double sided sticky tape?

Post subject:  Re: Number plate legal or not

Halfords sell small packs with the plastic nuts and bolts for fixing number plates. That's how mine is attached just got to drill two small holes through the number plate for the bolts to screw into the mounting holes in the black plastic front grille. Trouble with double sided tape is it's not very robust or secure and easy for people to steal your plates!

If you drill make sure you drill from the back of the plate towards the front - not the other way round.
