I'm looking for suggestions on updated clutch for a road based vehicle. I'm not looking for it to launch off the line or suchlike but to have a decent life and hold higher torque than standard (350 lb/ft??)

My previous experience suggests a full face and I have previously used RPS max Street and clutch masters fx300 which were a bit heavy but livable.

What's the current alternatives?

Helix full face organic seems to get a lot of good feedback but no personal experiance.

I'm currently running an FX300 and not that impressed. Apart from the pedal travel problems, the one time Dan drove the car on an autotest I ended up with a cooked clutch. Daryl also used one and got about 20K miles out of it with normal driving (TCB OEM clutch fitted subsequently already done more).

There does seem to be some reported issues with the FX300. I have no idea the miles on mine as it came in the car but it did fail (friction material worn down and slipping rather than a fault) although to be fair it had been running 1.35-1.4 bar for a while.

The RPS max street was a quite firm clutch pedal in comparison but I only drove this for 10K before selling the car.

The Helix full face seems to get good reviews as you say. One to consider, I see they also sell the friction plate separate when it does wear out.

I'm using Blitz Active (relabeled Ogura if I'm not mistaken) in mine(+/- 280 hp @ the wheels). Use it for mormal road use.
Drives like the std one, rattles when the pedal is on the ground. I have done 15000km with it now, no problems of any kind.

ACT have a good selection of clutches ranging from sprung organic right up to full out non sprung race paddle clutches.

I use a 6 puck sprung disc mated to a Fidanza FW in my own car.
It's very nice to use on the road and copes well with launches, no noise.
Rated to 500 ib/ft
Sold a fair few now and have only had positive feedback.

So it looks like the helix clutch is only rated to 340 lb/ft (although some have used it at higher torque). I'd guess at 350 lb/ft -400 for my requirements long term

It seems that higher rated clutches are available from competition clutch, act and exedy.

Ideally I'm after a full face sprung unit and suspect I'll just have to put up with a heavy clutch as a compromise for having a reasonable wear rate and a clutch that will not be digital in operation.

Any thoughts on material type (organic, cerametalic, sintered, carbon) or manufacturers? Ideally I'm trying to avoid twin plate or puck clutches but a 6 puck may be a compromise I have to make?

That is the main reason I didn't go for the Helix as I thought it might be a bit under capacity for my needs.

I can't really recommend the Competition Clutch - whilst I haven't had any major issues, it is very heavy and quite smelly as well on pull away/maneuvering.

I'm not sure where to go with my next clutch so will read this thread with interest.

I've gone with the uprated Helix cover plate and full face organic friction plate to get the best of both worlds. I know you are targeting 400lbft with your engine build but if you map the ECU carefully you can reduce the shock loading on the clutch and the uprated organic may well be perfectly capable in that circumstance.

Driveability is the key so if I were you I'd consider giving up on your Ken Block gymkhana impersonations! :evil:
