Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for an aftermarket exhaust to replace the original?

My GT4 RC’s (ST185) exhaust has finally started blowing after 26 years! Impressive durability, however I have just learnt can no longer get a straight replacement from Toyota.

The car has been de-cat’d, runs a Greedy Solenoid boost controller@ 1bar boost and has a KN air filter as a straight replacement for the standard box filter.
I’d like the exhaust to be durable, which I guess means stainless.

I’d don’t want a very loud exhaust, I’m not after the ‘Bazza’s XR3I’ type effect. Nice and throaty would be fine but, the bottom line is this is a 4 pot so it’s never going to sound like a V8.

I also quite like the double tail pipe of the standard exhaust, however this isn’t essential. I do find some of the extra-large exhaust outlets a little bit ‘meh’, do I really want to stick my fist in it?

I look forward to hearing what you recommend.

Thanks Louise

Hi, from looking at the exhausts available there are two that stand out.

The first is the HKS Silent Hi-Power.
It's clearly louder than the standard exhaust, but I just wondered if anyone here had used one and could vouch that it's not excessively loud?
I also wondered about the Turbo Boost running away, given the lack of back pressure, so should I plan to have to fit a restriction plate?
They have them for sale from Perfect Run:

I haven't found any available that don't require importing into the UK from Japan. Doing it this way the exhaust costs £379 and P&P pushes it to just over £600. Is this the best/cheapest option?

Does anyone know if this exhaust comes with all the gaskets and rubber hangers to fit it? Given the hangers are 26 years old I felt it's probably best to change them and I doubt I can get them from Toyota any more, given the stock exhaust is no longer sold by them.

The other option is from BMM Performance in Oxford, which looks very much like the standard exhaust and comes in 4 pieces.

I spoke to BMM on the phone and they didn't seem to know much about it. Has anyone used this exhaust or had any experience of BMM. I have to admit at this point in time I'm a little dubious regarding this option.

A thought that occurred to me is I can easily get to the Ace Cafe on the North circular. If their are any 'GT4 meet ups' planed, I could come along and listen to peoples exhausts first hand.

Any exhaust related advice would be welcome.

Thanks Louise

I can't comment on the exact model but I used to have a HKS exhaust on my ST205, I really liked it - not too noisey. The only reason I swapped it is that it had rotted through - unfortunately they are made from mild steel (at least mine was) and as it had been used for a number of years through the winter it suffered. Whilst a downside for longevity the mild steel does 'soften' the noise, stainless tends to be 'raspier'.

The exhaust hanger runners are still available (were last year) as I replaced all of mine.
As for exhaust, none are anywhere near as quiet as a stock exhaust. I hate to say it but I think you are in the land of a "powerflow" and just ask for smallish bore and plenty of silencers! The quietest of the aftermarket exhausts is the scorpion but they are no longer made. I've tried most now!

Having had a good rummage under the car, I realise that fixing the hole in the exhaust with an aftermarket one wont work. The hole is in the first exhaust section just after the braided pipe on the top surface. It's going to have to be a take the exhaust off and weld job. All the aftermarket exhausts that I found bolt on after this section. Oh well at least I know a good body shop that specialises in restoring classic cars and preparing racing cars, in Thriplow in Cambridgeshire
