Hi.
I am sure this has been covered before but I've searched and searched and cannot find anything.

Are 18" wheels too big for the st185? Does it ruin the handling and if so why?

Does anyone have any photos of an st185 with 18" wheels?

Hi basher,

What have you got on your 185 at the moment? I have 18's on mine at the moment and have had no real issues using 18's but the 16's seem to give it more chuckability. Maybe I need to space them out and play with the suspension.

I'll put a pic on later with the 18's on. (got them when I had a mk3 granada and found they were double drilled)

Hey.
It has 16's on at the moment, I forget the make.
They are fine performance wise but I want to fit some big brakes on there, so the bigger the wheel the better.

If you have a pic that'd be great.

I've tried 15s, 17s and 18s on my ST185.
18s were terrible but part of that could be because they were big & heavy (cheap brand), I swapped to OZ superleggera and it was a clear difference and significantly better. The 18s seemed to slow steering response and cause some wierd bump steer & boinging about over bumps, humps and yumps. They also caused clearance issues and rubbed.

I later fitted 17s and 18s to my ST205 (both superleggera so quite light) and didn't notice much difference but it felt a little more nimble on 17s and more "planted" or stable on 18s.

On the 350z forum there is the phrase 19s for show 18s for go - I guess the same applies here if you want handling then get the smaller wheel, if you want to look good go larger (most tastes are not to have huge lumps of rubber on show right!)

As above unsprung weight makes a big difference, buy a set of Cruise wheels off ebay for £60 a wheel and you get what you pay for.

Also bear in mind tyre selection, harder side walls on lower profile tyres will impact handling and ride comfort etc.

I think I'll end up with the 17s as you can still get big enough brakes in them.
Yeah, the lighter the better.
I was thinking either revolution milleniums, compomotive mo's or fifteen52 tarmacs.
I also like the japan racing jr3 but I've not found weights on any of them yet.

Have a chat with Tarmac Sportz, ask for Chris, tell him Col from the 350z forum pointed you there and you will be ok ;-)

He has been selling JR wheels for a few years now and has all styles, colours and sizes and knows pretty much all you need to know about them.

I have a 205 but my experience with wheels having been 16 stock then for many years on 17 is that 16s are comfortable for everyday driving but sloppy when u do silly things on roundabouts. If you are young and / or have a strong spine then go 17s+ As the extra stickability is an intense upgrade. I’ve gone back to stock because for one thing I think Toyota knows best what fits on their cars and having spent billions coming to those conclusions I trust their judgement better than some random upgrader. Secondly I’m bloody old now, I drive the car more carefully - there are bloody cameras everywhere anyway. 16s are just soo very much easier on your back. Perhaps its just me, or my bad spine.... If I wanted to go track - obs 18s!!!

Lower profile tyres have less flex in the sidewall. This generally gives a more responsive feel and often better grip on dry smooth tarmac. The downside is that they don't cope so well with uneven surfaces, debris, imperfect suspension angles. They are also much less progressive when they do start sliding. So, aside from the harsher ride, you get tyres that are all or nothing and are prone to letting go if you hit a damp patch or a few stones.
The 205 copes better with bigger wheels as the superstrut keeps the angles better.
