the cage as shown in these pics is the one wiggy was selling in november last year. its originally from a WRC-replica corolla which was used as show piece for a guy who made the replicas (or something like that) as wiggy said, it would fit a 165 and it does...pretty much ![]() so, without further ado, here are the pics ![]() brett being lazy. didnt lift a finger during this install as he was "busy" sanding down a caravan. but heres a pic of him anyway ![]() ![]() ted the dog, having a rest on the drivers seat ![]() this is lardy, who races bangers. he did all the welding whilst i put out the fires with a damp rag. top bloke ![]() ![]() drivers side rear mounting. its welded onto a plate which is in turn welded to the chassis ![]() passenger side rear mount. the cage was welded in this fashion for two reasons. to allow removal of the cage without causing too much damage to it, and to spread the load of the mounting point. ![]() Now onto the mid section of the cage. these is again welded to a bracket which is welded to the chassis. the bracketry is 3mm steel plate, so its solid ![]() ![]() the front section of these plates is a real work of art. they were cut to follow the contour of the floorpan and sill, so match perfectly and are fully welded ![]() you may have noticed by now that the stock turret bracing has been removed. this was getting in the way of the cage. other rollcages i have seen don't brace across the turrets (unlike this one) and instead weld onto each turret on the forward facing side. needs must ![]() ![]() here again we see a steel plate bracket welded to the floor and chassis rail. the cage is bolted to this bracket as i wanted the option to remove the front bars when practical. ![]() this is the other side at the front ![]() ![]() my car, outside my office, this morning ![]() all thats left now is to tidy up the old turret brace at the rear and then to paint all the welding points and bracketry. ![]() a nice arty(?) shot ![]() see you all at oakington trackday on the 30th april ![]() |

Looking good mate! What has that done to your insurance premium then? Or are you trailering it to trackdays now? |

Excellent pictures Andy ![]() Do you plan to fit any padding to the cage? I always worry about the potential effects of hitting your unprotected head against the cage in an accident on the road. Could turn a fenderbender into a major accident. |

Good point, Mike. Maybe you've found a use for the chav weasels that are usually found on Corsa seatbelts. ![]() Just a thin sponge sleeve would do the job I guess. Maybe some waterpipe lagging to remain in keeping with the "project cheap 'n' nasty" title? |

Maybe some waterpipe lagging to remain in keeping with the "project cheap 'n' nasty" title? lol, i hope youre joking with the lagging? ![]() there is some safety devices moulded polyurethane padding on the leg uprights and the roof bars, but youre right, i am going to get some more of it. i did some heavy breaking this morning and nearly hit the upper crossbar with my forehead. im going to get more of this stuff, which is v similar to that already fitted. ![]() i'll be removing the front bars anyway (he says), although it does give me something to lean my right leg against when cornering hard |

Andy - thats exactly the sort of stuff I meant. Pipelagging would likely provide some modicum of protection but not much. The stuff in the picture is also FIA approved which is re-assuring however its use is still based on the assumption that a helmet is being worn. I think the removal of the front bars is a sensible move. ![]() When I eventually get a roll bar sorted for my car I won't be having anything coming forward of the front seats to allievate this problem. ![]() |

i cant really say yet as i havent been pushing it. certainly it feels better, more precise. ive also fitted the poly bush in the lower rear hubs (left the trailing arms well alone) since driving it last. how much of that is placebo, and how much is real improvement, will be found out at oakington ![]() |

Maybe some waterpipe lagging to remain in keeping with the "project cheap 'n' nasty" title? It's exactly for this reason that roll cages are a huge no no on road cars here in NZ. If you want one, then the car must be certified with a Motorsport NZ log book if it is to be run on a public road. As for the cage, looks pretty good, though I'd be a little concerned about how the mid section has been welded onto those brackets before being welded onto the floor. That might stand up to a big impact too well as the load isn't spread very well on the floor itself. Gary |
