Hi,

I am researching the possibility of fitting a stock st205 head gasket to my st185.

Why well because the Dragon has had the head gasket go twice before i aquired it, in a short space of time.

While the first one was probably the result of the heater matrix letting go in a big way the second is obvious.

As i am aware the radiator was replace but it does look a bit feeble, the rad cap is poo..the job may have been shall we say w litttle hit or miss and the bolts may have been cheep as well as the gasket.

Rather than lay out 160+ Beer Tokens and have the gasket go again i thought i might try the ST205 Gasket.

I found a site which listed this as possible as the standard gasket is just the same as the 1.2mmTRD gasket but at a fraction of the price.
Now as is always the way i can't find that site no matter where i look so without engines heads and gaskets to compair it's Photo time.

As far as i can see the blocks are not really any different.
There would appear to be a slight difference in the water gallery style between the two head but esentially they are in the same places.

Gaskets appear to have very minor diferences in the water jacket area

the 205 gasket would appear to have one extra water hole on both cylinders 1&4 while cylinder 2&3 have smaller holes at the opposite ends of the water ways.

So if anyone has carriered out this MOD any info would be of interest, changes to the gasket you made or if you just fitted it as is.

Thanks to Kris for the photos of the st185 and 205 gaskets side by side and the 205 block shot most helpfull and doomaniac for the PM's

Midnite - I'm not sure what gasket Stew Booton runs on his engine, I think it maye be the 205 gasket? It might be worth dropping him an e-mail - stewboot@yahoo.co.uk

I have spoke to Stew and he runs the standard dealer gasket for a 205 with a 205 head on a 185 block.

He says it wont work but that has to be incorrect when you think about it logically as he is using one on a 185 block and the 205 head doesn't look to be vastly different.

I think it will work and at worst would offer better water flow to the head.
There maybe a need to drill a couple of extra holes to CYL2 and 3.
it would be good to get hold of aa old one to try on top of my gasket head and block. My local Toyota Dealers Are Donkeys.

I may just have to order one in and try it for size, i'm about 80% certain it will work from my photo research.

so i may just have to try it...and see..

It shouldn't take even those donkeys more than a couple of days to get one in..

Oh Year they wanted chassis number model code and every thing before they would even speak to me about bolts they are scared to death of Imports...

Idiots do they think that a jap, aussie, usa or uk st 185 3sgte has a different engine for each country?
if you cantact ARP they couldn't give a T*ss where the engine is ment for...

Why not just go for a 185 specific uprated gasket?

Fensport sell a TRD 1.2/1.4 job for not too much money considering it should be "for life"

Do you have any idea if the head was checked for true when the gasket was changed? Well worth checking before putting it all back together

Aren't the waterways and oil lines different on the 185 head?

It could cause much more serious problems if you block one of those.

Well the TRD is the same gasket as the standard 205 gasket and the price difference is about 120 quid.

The block maybe cracked and i don't have time to pull it as i will be moving house soon.

The Challenge is to fit what shouldn't fit and anyway if i am right why pay 3 times as much for the same thing?

I planned to get another engine and rebuild it then do a swap out, that has taken a back burner due to this house moving lark Bloody expensive..

Mat if you do have one laying around that could be really helpful.

But some times reasearch is expensive and unproductive and if it is so be it.

YOU WIN SOME AND YOU LOSE SOME.....

This topic seems to have dried up and i didn't think that i would be th only person to have spotted this idea as a possible cheap alterative to hks trd or blitz gaskets.

there must be some people out there who have thought of or tried this mod?
