Are there any special tricks involved in removing an airbag equipped steering wheel from an ST205? I don't particularly want it blowing up in my face

no nor did I Don! erghh I cant gaurantee this but I still had my face intact after removal :-)

I have a wheel here if you wanted to practise :-)

1) remove negative battery cable
2) leave for 10-15 minutes and go get coffee
3) remove the two plastic covers either side of the wheel at teh back (These prise out)
4) Undo the big long Star drive headed bolt that is on oneside only (I think this deactivates the airbag????????)
5) Undo the 2 smaller star drive headed bolts (one either side)
6) Remove the two little screws that retain the plastic clips that are still holding the items undone in stage 5 in place.
7) Whole ABS/centre of wheel can now be removed.

Then you hav eto try and undo teh big centre nut :-)

I should point out taht my car is a JDm and I thought they didnt come with airbags so I merrily took teh precautions I had heard of and cracked on - apparently it could be active still.

All usual Caveats apply :-)

These tips are taken from a Haynes guide to car modification.

1. Before removing the airbag disconnect the battery. Wait a while because the airbag system retains a charge for 10 minutes or so.

2. When the airbag is out it must be stored the correct way up

3. The airbag is sensetive to impact so don't drop it. Even if it doesn't go off it probably wont work again.

4. If you intend to refit the airbag wheel then store it in a cool place (and a suitable one in case it goes off)

5. Airbags must not be exposed to temperatures of more than 90C. Realistically this will only happen in a paint drying oven.

HTH

The manual was written for chavs

I edited out the sentence "Once an airbag has gone off it's scrap. You can't push the stuff back in again"

Hey Guys it's a criminal offence to store an airbag off a vehcle unless....

it is stored in a SAFE not a biscuit tin.

Too store an airbag for more than the period of a repair IE over night you are require to have a SAFE and be Registered with the POLICE and Hold A FIREARMS certificate.

Should there be an incident that comes back to you you may well find that armed police the bomb squaud and the anti terrorism unit turn up and raid ya home.

at the least you may get a waisting police time.
then again it could be an explosive, firearms or terrorism rap.

Be carefull... there is enough there to kill you..or detach part of your arm from ya body...

What a great safety device.:roll:

And the only time I know of when a mate could have done with it, it failed to deploy :roll:

I know a bloke who clipped a kerb in spirited driving and the side airbag in the car went off, burnt his arm

No doubt the flare that comes with most of the JDM cars is highly illegal too
