hey , i want to buy a nice gt4 for a fair price. Only problem: owner says there is some sensor damaged. I called him and he told me:

When under preasure (so i guess when accelerating hard) then the car gets put into the emergency program to not destroy the turbo.

Any ideas what could cause the problem? I thought the worst (and most expensive) case would be the ECU ?

thanks

you need to establish what the ecu shows up as a fault code by bridging the diagnostic terminals

could be a knock sensor: error code 52
could be charge cooler level sensor : error code 54

or turbo pressure sensor overboosting etc

search the how to guides on here: http://www.gt4dc.co.uk/info/howto/howto.htm

and www.gtfours.co.uk

lol if its that easy to find out what causes the error, then i wonder why that guy (who has reapired alot on the car like a new engine etc) didnt do that... i will ask him to try that out.. i somehow think that there is a bigger problem with the car than just one of these sensors.

thanks

GT-four... mmm...

st 165, st185 or st 205?

The Toyota mechanic of my city didn't knew you can read ecu error codes just bridging 2 pins, eh...

On the ST205 the engine will go into limp mode or emergency program if there's a leak in the air feed to the MAP sensor. If that's the problem then it's easily fixed :)

its that one:

2,0 l, 3S-GTE, , DOHC, GT-Four/turbo All-trac/turbo 4WD, 150 kW (204 PS)

from 1992

so it should be the st185 if i got that right :)

so the errors code reading should work like described in the link above?

thanks

This is just a hunch...

ST185 > i bet you a $ dollar that it is error code 52 > blown knock sensor = £140 GBP/
or the shielded wire running from ecu to the knock sensor is broken.

just a guess > it fails on the st185 when using too much boost and prevents the car from running over 2500 rpm approx.

basically a significant detonation event from high boost and poor intercooling has killed the sensor that is supposed to monitor detonation = "knock"
