Hi,

- open or short speed sensor wires
- damaged speed sensor

and the last but not so possible

- ECU

hope you can solve the problem

If it's an ST205 the speed sensor connects to the speedo, then a feed goes from that to the ECU, so since none of it is working the problem will be the speed sensor, the instrument cluster, or the wiring in between.
Knowing it's a car you've just bought and wiring has been hacked about, I would strongly suspect a problem with (or removed) km - miles converter which normally sits on the back of the speedo.

gonna sound really dumb here, i took the clocks out to look for the de-limiter (converter) but as im used to imprezas which have a speedo cable which you join it to, and the celica (st205) is electric, i dont kno where it is or what it looks like

Normally a small box about 25mm cube with wires which attach to the screws on the back of the speedo.

only thing on the back of the clock is a tiny red box with an orange wire going infrom the loom and out the other side, joining the rest and into the speedo...., any1 got a pic of 1 and also if possible a pic of the speed sonsor attached to the gearbox?

Rising Son,

There are loads of different makes of delimiter so it might be easier to post a pic of what you have, rather than us taking our cars apart!

The red box you mention *could* be the delimiter, but it would be easier to know with a pikki ;) any markings on the unit?

Another post you may find useful, including a link to workshop manuals with circuit diagrams.

Just found a pic of the convertor attached to mine. Ignore the yellow wire on the right of the pic, was a mod to put a fog light warning lamp onto the dash for MOT.

I hope I'm right in thinking this one is the speed sensor - it all looks different out of the car

(viewed from back of the car. The shaft sticking downwards is the drive to the rear axle)
