Hey, gonna change over gearboxes in my 185..

I only have jackstands and a jack, and will have to get an engine hoist from somewhere.

could i and would it be easy if i jacked the car up onto 4 jackstands nice and high then dropped the engine down to the ground, unbolted the gearbox and then slid out the old one and install the new one?

or do i have to pull the entire motor out?

Thanks guys

I'd recommend pulling the whole engine...

To expand on Kris's post a little

You don't have to drop the engine to swap gearboxes but if this your first go at anything like this it will be easier
Splitting the gearbox from the engine is not easy at the best of times and getting them back together can be even more annoying. Lining it all up is really quite difficult with the engine and box sitting on the floor. On axle stands I imagine it would be a very very annoying experience

On a 185 out the bottom is the easiest method which is useful as you end up with everything on the floor. From there it should be possible to seperate engine from gearbox but it will be easier if you can get both out from under the car

While it's out it's also worth doing some other service work - changing the cambelt is pretty simple when the engine is out and it's worth checking for wear in the water and oil pumps

I usually stick a sheet of hardboard (shiny side up) or an old kitchen worktop on the ground and drop the engine onto it, then it slides out easier.

185 is definately easier out of the bottom as the crossmembers come off easily. (205 the steering & suspension bolt to it so a PITA)

From my experience, the easy way to mate engine & gearbox back up is to roll the engine onto it's front (on some soft padding to prevent damage) and then lower the gearbox onto it using the engine crane. This gives the easiest manoverabilty while taking the gearbox weight with the crane. Obviously both engine & gearbox oil need to have been drained for this.
