I`m looking to eventually replace the loom in the Celica but as the car will have virtually no standard parts remaining, the lights and control stalks will remain but the instrument display, ECU, heating controls, window controls etc will either be removed or replaced with a non Toyota alternative.

Is it best to slice and splice the standard loom or just start again and make one up, I expect that some standard engine sensors will remain but others will be non standard.

Is it possible to leave the loom for the lights, indicators etc in place but replace the loom for the engine, instrument display, heater controls or are they intertwined too much?

I will need alot of help with the electrics as I know very little about them and dont know much beyond the mass of wires that you can see and doing this amount of work fills me with dread and visions of hours and hours of fault finding.

I haven't replaced a 205 loom but I have on a 165 and I'd recommend replacing the whole thing. Within the loom there are cores crimped together, and this proves problematic, (to say the least), to make a professional looking and working loom!

If you are replacing sensors etc then this is an even better reason to start again as you should have new connectors/pins etc to fit onto your new slim line Gucci loom!

I recommend getting a catalogue from these guys.... http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu

Brilliant link Kris.

I'll be redoing my ST185 track car (engine loom and interior loom).
I was going to start by removing the unwanted wiring first (heater system, electrics to doors, etc. etc.) and then looking at making a new loom.

What ecu will you use?

sounds an odd question but CAN capabilites has a big effect if you want to go "all the way"

If you're going to use a pnp ecu like MoTeC M4 then imo keep the wiring stock/stock with some wiring mods

If you're planning to run it off a more current ECU look at new looms

New wiring shouldn't be taken lightly. You will need new connectors + tooling to mate with all remaining Toyota stuff in the car, or you need to cut off connectors from old loom and splice to new wires - an extra source of unreliability.
you can often pick now unused wires and re-allocate to a new function so changes to the loom are minimal.

I am not entirely sure yet...non of the current well established "used on GT4s" ECUs appeal to me very much appart from the MOTEC but its getting old now. I was thinking I`d give the Syvecs ECU a shot as it seems to do everything I want and more.

I'm using a MOTEC M4 for my track car.

I have an Emanage Ultimate sitting around doing nothing and if it don't sell may experiment with it on my 205.
Like the idea of this ECU as its a piggy-back and thus you can retain the safety features of the std ECU.

Having said that I've heard the AEM ECUs are really good - talk to James at TGT.
