Hey guys,

not too sure where to post this, so admins feel free to move it to where fit!

Im looking at trading my ST205 for an ST165, As I've always loved the 165
's shape and styling. Im not questioning whether it is worth it or not, but more wondering what are some things to look out for when buying a 165? are there any model / age specific points of wear?

What are some important things that would need to be replaced (it is completely stock)

I would be looking to modify it of course

thanks in advance

Cheers

Fisch

Hi Fisch,

OPinions are a wonderful thing... here's mine!

The heart may say go for the 165, but the head should say 205.

Technically the 205 is superior to the 165, but I agree, I like the 165s looks.

The 165s biggest problem is the damn rust, and secondary to that is parts - both the availability of stock and aftermarket bits... Toyota are beginning to not support the 165...

So my 2p is - Head 205, heart 165 :)

As far as problems go -

Rust hence really hard to find a good one. A 165 will be a project not a jump in and drive car.

Agree with the above, rust free 165's are as rare as hens teeth. My ideal 165 would be one upgraded with a 205 engine and transmission with a rust free body of course!

I gather the 165 is the lightest so has some merit as a track car.

Otherwise, rust is the biggest killer. I gather they tend to dissolve behind the bodykit. Expect to pay a lot of money for a rust-free one.

Also there is a fair bit that's different to 185's & 205's and even scrap 165's are getting rare so parts are getting difficult.

I have to agree there is something about a tidy 165 that stirs the soul but I can imagine owning one is a full on commitment. I heard a story once about a guy who went shopping in one whilst it was raining, by the time he came out of the shop and back to his car all that was left was four tyres some plastic trim and a pile of brown dust  . If you decide to get one and keep it good then you’re a hero in my book. Good luck on your decision. Dorris

my advise,

scrap the st205 / break for spares

then buy a tidy st165 chassis from japan:

Quote:
Celica GT-FOUR ST165 you take me skiing

Image

82165 Japanese yen = £620 British pounds

or http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e107479950

and then you only need replace everything else

swap rear subframe axels and brakes
swap engine and gearbox

buy new front brake kit
buy new coilovers all round

:D

have you already found a ST165 local to you in NZ?

I have indeed, only problem is that it is in the middle of the south island (with me in the top of the north), He is a dealer and would take the 205 as a part trade with some money my way.

it is a 100 000km WRC replica, supposedly no-rust (will be getting an expert inspection) and It looks to be moderately modified, again the dealer is no expert which makes this difficult. From what I can see from the provided pictures is a turbo timer, cold air box with I assume an AM air filter, adjustable suspension (again, unsure of make / spec) and AM Exhaust. It also has a half cage.

HMM decisions decisions
