Hi,

Having recently bought an ST205 for use on a track, and modification to eventually race it, is there options for Cages apart from the OMP bolt in option. I Just wonder if a ST18 series cage would fit, or if anyone here can recommend a good place to get a cage fabricated for a reasonable price.

Thanks in advance.

Depends if you want a good cage or just a bunch of pipes?

Not a fan of bolt in cages, but there are plenty of places to get a custom cage fabricated which in my opinion is a much better option...more costly, but better overall.

There are loads of roll cage manufacturers to choose from.

Yep, agree with the advice above. There seem to be a lot of problems getting off the shelf cages to fit. Better to get one built into the car. CDS (cold drawn steel) tube is easier and cheaper to fit. If money isnt a problem and you want maximum lightness then T45 tube is the one to use. Most of the pro Race and Rally teams use T45 but for club racing CDS is more commonly used. I've gone with CDS in my track build.

The other thing to consider is that most off-the-shelf cages are 2 piece, that is, the rear part of the cage slots into, and is bolted to, the front part.
This is sometimes frowned upon in some MSA events.

Cusco, Sparco, OMP, Safety Devices all do off-the-shelf cages.
Avoid dash dodging cages like the plague.

You're only going to do it once so do it properly - Bespoke made-to-measure is definitely the way to go.

Prices on bespoke cages vary but for an idea...
Andy Robinson (Basingstoke) will charge you £1485 + vat for a 9-point cage.
I have been lucky enough to find somewhere (X-Sport Racing, Basingstoke) that will do a 6-point cage for £850 + vat.

Thanks guys, I was coming to the same conclusion, only going to do it once, so might as well get something built for her. If it's a one off component i don't mind paying a bit more if it's done for me. Just a decision as to how many points to get put in now, I'd love something with lots of X's and bracing, but I will give them a ring and chat with the experts.

Yeah as far as I gather from the TSS rules the cages don't need to be approved, but the scruitneers have a right of veto in any case.

As I understand it the official homologation has expired for the ST205 roll cages fabricated using T45 tube. This means that for MSA events you need to use something like CDS. The MSA won't approve the dash dodging cage designs. Its worth checking the MSA Blue Book for the latest regs. If you are getting a bespoke cage made up you may as well be legal.

I stand corrected although I think my version sounds more impressive/scary to the track opposition :D

I believe dash dodgers would be OK provided you make a solid connection to the top of the "knee" thus forming a straight front leg

Would look uglier than sin though, a definite 6 pinter
