Sorry I probably ought to clarify that....
I investigated using the Cusco web site.
http://www.cusco.co.jp/en/catalog/chassis.html
There's no underbody brace listed for the ST165.

Have you tried Gary?

I've had an e-mail convo with my Swiss homie Stefan about this a while ago. He's building the JDM'est 165 ever and based upon the specs of my 185 CUSCO Lower arm bar type II (the 4 point one) he said it won't work.

The type I (2 point) apparently is interchangeable though..

This brace is a waste of time imho... sorry to disappoint owners/potential buyers!

I beg to differ and imo I do think it works :!:
But...
I think it works well with other modifications, e.g, uprated suspension, uprated front arb and steering geometry.
This is based on my experience of using one with my ST205.

Have to say I'm with Kris here, if you look at the solid steel three dimensional structure that the Cusco underbrace attaches to, I can't see anyway that a bent piece of aluminium is going to do anything.

Well I thought the handling on my ST205 was improved after I'd fitted mine.

Short of doing a scientific analysis I dont think any one can say conclusively either way whether underbody braces make a difference. All I would say is that in karts the handling is super critical and tweaked using cross braces and adjusting small things like the tightness of the bolts. Admittedly a kart is a lot different to a car but when I stripped my car down to the bare shell the lack of torsional rigidity was scary

Basically anything that creates more of a three dimensional cage structure in the chassis will improve the chassis stiffness. There's an Aussie company that makes a whole range of under chassis braces for the Impreza. I suspect this is aimed at people who don't want to fit an internal roll cage cutting holes in the trim and losing the rear seats. The underbody braces wont give anything like the 3D stiffness of a full roll cage but I'm sure they are better than the bare chassis and that can only be a good thing.

My 2p!

im also with muddy water and track toy four.. i put one in my 185 and thought it was the best handling mod i have done so far.. it drastically reduced understeer around a corner that i normally take pretty hard.. its also saved me from flying into a tree..

its so annoying that the 165 has such little aftermarket support compared to the 185 and 205.. Cant even work out a low temp thermostat *bleep*??

The GT4 chassis needs all the help it can get. Both my st185 & st205 had serious wobbles over large road undulations and you can feel the chassis twisting then springing back and continuing to oscillate. (A bit like a soft top & scuttle shake). Stiffening the suspension made it worse as less of the movement required was taken up by the suspension.

The 2 sporty cars I now regularly drive (built circa 2003) have far stiffer chassis for torsional rigidity and don't suffer the same way.

Personally I believe that the upper braces provide a noticeable improvement to turn in. Having looked at the subframes I just can't see how the lower brace will improve anything. Neither will do anything for the floppy sills and roof which is more fo a concern.

Try jacking your car up from one corner and watch the chassis sag & twist. Then try it on a new car with good torsional stiffness.

The 185 setup is different to the 205 and may well benefit from the underbrace... I just don't think the 205 benefits from this addition - just look at the front subframe and how a bent piece of aluminium and stiffen this area is difficult to see...

Hi,

i'am also with kris even i don't tested it, the only one reason for me to put this brace on is that it is a nice bracket for a undertray

the chassis and suspension does not have such a wrong that makes the brace in need, or you should not drive the car any longer

So you only improve your car on parts that will fail otherwise?
