Hi, Basically im getting the error code 12 atm. Ive researched and found its something to do with the 'NE' or 'G' signals. I think its linked to crank and cam position sensors? Not sure on this so if some one could help that would be great! Quick description, the car runs but sound like its misfiring constantly, if i rev it it smooths out slightly but if it gets some load it misses or judders like hell. Thanks!

It shouldn't run at all with code 12 as this means the ECU isn't getting the trigger signals from the distributer. It may be a poor / intermittant connection to the distributer (Big plug that goes in the side at the bottom).

Try resetting the ECU (remove EFI fuse for 10 sec) then run the engine again and then check for codes again. It may just be a stored code.

I take it you have the engine back together again ?

as soon as i went back out to the car after that post i remembered i forgot to plug up the dizzy. So i plugged it in and didnt remove the error! Oops lol but the problem was there before and still exists... Yeah the engines all back together again. Compressions at an all round 175 and it does run. But the engines shaking and rough. The hoses for the blue canister have come off in fitment so got to plug all that lot back in before starting the head scratching. I have blocked the hose off from the inlet manifold though. Shouldnt that disable it all anyway?

Have you checked cam timing and ignition timing ?

(remember ignition timing should be set with E1 & TE1 linked and should be 10deg BTDC)

Is the misfire regular (e.g missing on 1 cylinder - subaru noise) or is it just random ?

yeah you could say it sounds like a subaru. It smooths out with a few revs tho. But any load brings it back. The bit you wrote in brackets looked forieghn :?

I lined up dizzy marks and bolted it up central, cam timing marks all corrospond..

If it's regular then probably 1 cylinder or 2 with a problem.

Most likely things -
Injector plug not pushed fully home.
Ignition leads swapped (2 cylinders not firing )
Duff ignition lead or plug.

If the exhaust smells strongly of petrol then it's more likely an ignition problem.

Ive just been out and brought a timing gun now. Ive pointed it at the cranks and turned the knob until the light shows the crank mark at 0, the timing gun says thats 21deg. This was done with the diagnostic port shorted. Can this gun tell me whats up if used right?

That's what we're here for. Apart from the wild curry parties that is

Should be set at 10 degrees with the port shorted so you're too advanced. As a double check, wind the gun to 0 and check alignment with the 10 deg. mark. I have a distrust of the delay knobs on timing guns.

If you're 2 or 3 cylindering, then it's unlikely to be timing related but you still need to get it right or you'll end up killing the engine when you use your right foot.

Does it smell strongly of petrol from the exhaust ?

so with the gun set at 0 it should line up with the 10deg notch? Theres no smell of petrol really. Theres a hissing noise which i cant pin point but i may just be paranoid. Im going to remove the fuel rail and refit tomorrow. All four are sparking ok. It starts on first turn over and ideals till i switch it off now. The engine shakes abit and sounds just like a scooby. Wouldnt know any different if i said i fitted a boxer engine.

Correct on the timing gun

You might be wise to check the cam timing. Unless you had the dizzy loose/off timing can only have changed it the inlet cam has moved

It might be that it was wrong before and you fixed it !

Dizzy normally needs to come off to get at the stuff round the back like manifold stays.

Could be an injector seal dropped off during fitting.
Is the hiss steady or in pulses as if just 1 cylinder
Best way to find the souce is a short piece of garden hose held to an ear an the other end becomes a directional microphone you can waffle round the engine bay.
