As far as I know the JUN pistons are supplied by Cosworth although this could just be urban myth

The source of JUN = Cosworth was a thread on the Skyline GT-R forum. There was quite a lot of detail so it seemed credible.
I have never seen anything which says Cosworth make Mahle pistons although if you have evidence to the contrary then I will stand corrected. Mahle are OEM suppliers and I see no reason for them to use an external supplier. Mahle supplied many of the F1 pistons in the turbo era as well as for the TTE run GT-Fours and most recently the dominant Audi R8 Le Mans sports prototype.

I too find this hard to believe. Mahle are one of the biggest "OEM" piston suppliers covering most things from motorbikes to dump trucks!
Unless they have some sort of range sharing agreement with others to fill in blanks in their product range

eek! Have I made a boo boo? I wish I could find the info I had on pistons that I "remember" to say that these were pretty much one and the same...maybe the grey matter has failed me! :(

BTW,

I forget whether it's the Ross or JE but

There was a huuuuge thread over on mr2oc about them. Apparently whichever it is assumes a 1.4mm HG to get the claimed 9:1 CR in an MR2 (possibly Gen II). Use of a stock HG results in a CR of >9.5:1 :shock:

Interesting link Don, one set of figures say the bore is 84.0mm, then further down another set say it's 87.0mm

Well, that clears that up! :)

Just opens up another can of worms as they quote the piston they make for the 3SGTE to be 84.0mm! :shock: DOH!

So, if they can't get the diameter of their piston correct, do they know who is supplying them their pistons! :lol:

Regarding the "Cosworth - Mahle - JUN" Statement I made...

A knowledgeable guy called Malcolm dropped me a line ;)

1. Cosworth design JUN pistons.
2. Cosworth, only design the pistons, they don't actually make them.
3. Mahle have the tooling under licence from Cosworth to make the pistons known as Cosworth pistons, and it is actually Mahle who manufacture the JUN pistons with Cosworth stamping.
4. You cannot buy JUN pistons straight off Mahle without the brand-tax, this is not possible due to a tooling agreement.
