I got a feeling i've asked this question before... but cant find any sign of it...

Is there any tell tale signs of an oil pump failure on its way?

My car has a bit of a rattle which has turned into a hummm but im pretty sure this is an aircon pully issue. The engine also seems to have started using a bit of oil but it isnt leaking or smoking that i can see. I think this is probably through using it as a daily driver and all those cold starts coving only 10miles/30mins each way.

Oil pressure/temp always seems good. Jumps to around 70psi from cold. 20psi idle fully warmed up to 90-100degrees and around 40psi on a gentle cruise no higher than 3000rpm.

With the exception of the accessories rattle i have no reason to think my oil pump is on its way out. But would be good to know the tell tale signs just in case.

Cheers guys

Hmm my cold start pressure is similar to yours however I see about 60psi on cruise.

My engine is also now using a small amount of oil at 145k miles.

Those numbers are what I see measured at the head too

I seem to recall about 15psi higher at the filter

As for signs of failure I don't recall ever hearing of a failed one!

Far the most common whine source is the power steering pump

I have some JDM Timex Gauges. An oil temp, oil pressure and one for boost.

Oil temp reads from one of the bungs above the oil filter on the cambelt side of the engine. The oil pressure comes off a t-piece with the standard oil pressure sensor underneath the charge cooler on the passenger side of the engine.

On proper cold days i do see the Oil pressure as high as 80-90psi sometimes.

When i say cruising i mean properly just resting my foot on the pedal and having no positive pressure whatsoever.

Im very much convinced that my strange noise is the AC pump but just thought i'd see if anyone knew of the symptoms of a failed oil pump; as i've been very paranoid about oil ever since june this year at the ring when my oil temps went over 130degrees and caused the water temp to shoot up which in turn made my 0.9bar rad cap let go through the bonnet vent over the windscreen  A 1.1bar rad cap sorted this and im going to finalise an oil cooler before attemping Nur again.

I've decided to change my cambelt in the new year once the snow disappears and it starts to get warmer again.

So im just making a list of things to replace at the same time like the water pump.

I dont think i'll bother with changing the oil pump unless it fails, which i should notice in plenty of time - i mean thats what the gauges are for after all! :) lol

Cheers guys :)

As you've already discovered, cooling is marginal on these cars, particularly when used in anger on track. I presume you are changing the oil and filter regularly and definitely after your 'Ring exploits? Keeping the oil fresh will reap dividends and keep your engine happy :D

Most common underbonnet noises are from the air con compressor clutch, alternator and associated drive belts. Most annoying is the tick-tick-tick noise  Worth ching the belt tension but the bearings might be knackered

Good luck.

I do regular oil changes every 2500-3000 miles with a filter change every other oil change.

I've slapped on a new alternator, tensioner pulley and belt. When i removed the belt and ran the engine without those accesories the rattle disappeared so my money is now firmly on the ac clutch.

Im thinking it over at the moment as to whether to repair this or just dump the AC system all together. My car spends all this life on the track now so i think i would benefit in loosing the systems and all that weight.

Cheers

Lee
