hello, what is the difference between the OEM Toyota piston rings and the after market WISECO/CP/JE piston rings? Is one of them more durable than the other or are all the same? And are the oem rings useable with wiseco pistons?

i talked with wiseco germany, and they say the material from wiseco rings are:

Quote:
1e ring = Stainless Steel/Gas Nitrided and barrel faced

2e ring = Cast Irion, phosphate coated, taper faced

3e ring = oil pack = Stainless steel flex vent spacer/chrome faced rails

what do you guys think? do the toyota use the same material for the oem rings?

OEM rings should not be used with anything but OEM pistons!

The ring/piston interface is critical and the two must be sized to match or there is a good chance of catastrophic damage to pistons and/or bores

If you're going with Wiseco pistons use wiseco rings etc etc

The only exception I'd personally make to that rule is something like totalseal rings where they will consult about the suitability of their rings for other pistons (they do not make pistons afaik)

This opinion was formed after reading a 10 page (yes 10 pages, really!) article on ring design in race engine technology. The only thing I learned from the article was that some things are just too geeky even for me  so best leave it to the design folks with pocket protectors and leather elbow patches

PS
At a guess Toyota may well be cast 1 and 2 ring
