I made a clocking braket, as you do.

i didnt think to measure the pre load on the waste gate Doh!

any ideas of how much pre load the standard St185 wastegate and actuator require.

The same as the answer to how much power does a Rolls Royce have?...... 'sufficient'

Sorry, I know that's probably not much help

I would go for about 1mm. Enough to stop it shaking loose when shut with a bit to spare. Too much and you'll get boost creep.

When i made the bracket and fitted it up on the bench it was designed to have the wastegate shut so you could slip the rod on as it sat.

then it was adjusted very slightly using microscopic adjustments with a calibrated 2lb hammer until the gate was firmly shut and you needed to pull the rod slightly to hook or unhook it from the pin.

When i got the new water feed pipe for the turbo at a later date, which was seperate from the main radiator pipe unlike my original one , i had to modifiy said bracket due to pipe interferance...

The water hose now runs through the centre of the bracket and a bracer plate has been welded ontop to prevent flexing.

I think it may have bent slightly at this time giving excess preload as it was a Tw@t to get back on and this was only in part to do with the crappy access.

so i wondered if anyone knew a way to apply pressure to the can and at what pressure rod movement might be felt.

And Chris... i always try to amuse and please my audience :)

In a word (ok, 2 words) - compressed air - about 6PSI ish. Either compressor with regulator or a foot pump.

I'll have to get my mityvac which also does vacumn and pressure. Probably do the job me thinks.

I'm almost certain it is over loaded

Thanks Baz,

i found what has happened, the bracket actuator and so on has been removed. alot of swearing and itching due to the exaust wrap!

Then refitted to my old turbo which has been recovered from the old dears garage and fitted to a near by bench.

Bracket fits perfectly and has approx 1mm preload.

Ok on the car...
if i fit the actuator once the bracket is on the car, it is possiple to get the actuator wonkey in the bracket which intern ups the preload.
it also appears there is a bit of difference in the turbo sizes!
when bolted on the preload is excessive and no amount of pressure will open the waste gate.

so i had to tweek it.

a grind here, a bend there and some rod reshaping and its on and it starts to lift from the seat around the 7-10 psi region.

so to refit it and move on to the oil system :)

1-2mm preolad is good as a rule of thumb. There are quite a few different styles of CTxx snails so if you are mounting your bracket on them be careful. Turbotechnics hybrids have the lever set to a totally different angle to the stock one, not sure about other makes though.

Great ta Nibbles, what name will I know you as then? I like to keep an eye on things a bit ;-)

Living in France now, life's slower but much less stressful. Might have another 205, if I can find a decent UK spec when I have the money to blow, never get a French one, they are silly expensive here.
