Rather than just make a stoopid comment, I should also have added something constructive....

I think you'll be fine with wood

When I did my engine swap I jacked the car on a 3x3(?) fencepost across the chassis rails
This lifted nearly the entire weight of the car as it was just ahead of the balance point
So I think a bare shell will be simple enough

I think the wood will be fine as you say.....I currently trust my wood working ability more than my welding ability.

I'll post up a picture of the "construction" when I'm done. See what people think.

Needs a bird table on top

That'll be well strong enough since it's all in compression

The crossbeams will need to be quite beefy, I'd recommend laminating those by glueing and screwing a couple or 3 bits together like you did with the main support

I think I will make the cross beam and pivot point from metal, only need a couple of bits for that.

The difficult bit will be welding the metal tube for the pivot to the top of the wood.

Actually, it may be better to make a 'v block' type arrangement in wood or maybe just bore a big hole through what you already have a few mm bigger than the pivot inner tube.

Wood is a very under-rated material for car use. Tree trunks make excellent 'axle stands' as they are far more stable and spread the loading on the bodywork much better as they are plyable.

p.s. I may have some shortish lengths of 44mm dia galv. pole if they're any good. Will have a look later check I haven't weighed them in.

I was thinking about just screwing two bits of angle iron to the top of the uprights bits of wood and then welding a tube between them to make the pivot.

its possible to just bore a hole through the uprights to make the pivot point, but thought it might split the wood down the grain.

Well its coming along nicely

Image

another cross member to add and its done.

Getting the metal has been a pain in the arse but i found a brilliant place to source metal. In Thirsk there is a steel stockholders called "Tomrods" when I rang them they said they didnt do offcuts, but I went along anyway, got speaking to one of the salesmen, he says....."come with me" takes me to their scrap bin...it turns out that they consider anything under 2meters long as scrap. Help yourself he says, just put £20 in the till and take what you want. They even cut it to length for me for free. Brilliant bunch, will definitely be using them again.
