Post subject:  Alternative 3rd brake light

As i am smoothing out the boot on the ST205 I have filed in the usual third brake light spot (I like the clean look it gives) so I have been thinking about an alternative.

I dont particularly like the look of a third brake light but for safety sake its probably better to have one....so the old grey matter pulled itself together and I have come up with an idea that I dont think has been done before.

What I am going to do is start off by taking a small cast of the back of the spoiler, only about 12 inches in the middle. I am then going to make a small copy of this section of spoiler out of resin. Then cut an elongated rectangle out of the back trailing edge of the spoiler (this will be substituted by the resin mould I will make.) In that resin mould I will put some LEDs so that the third brake light is part of the spoiler. What I am then hoping to do is to spray over the whole thing so that you cant see the third brake light (it should hopefully look like a plain old spoiler.

What I am then hoping is that the LEDs will be bright enough to shine through the paint (I will apply the piant thinly over the brake light area.)

My question is do you think its possible??? will the LEDs be bright enough to do this...and what power of LED will I need to use??????

Whilst in principle I don't think its a bad idea I think it will be difficult to make it look good and be effective.

Perhaps a better and easier solution would be to mount something on the parcel shelf??

Just my 2p. :)

This could work. Some of the Le Mans cars have been running this type of system fpr the last couple of years. The Audi R18 uses red LED's on the rear wing endplate. The LED's are surprisingly bright at night. I have no idea what power rating they are so can't help you there. If it was me I wouldn't paint over them as it may not look very good. Some sort of transparent strip would be better I think.

Good excuse to post some gratuitous pics of the Audi below to illustrate how the LED's look  8)
