From experience at events like the Toyota Sprint Series, track days etc. the power steering fluid gets a serious workout and the fluid appears to almost boil, particularly on the ST185's. On the ST205 there's a 'kettle element cooler' dangling in the breeze in front of the engine/intercooler radiator but this is clearly not up to the job. One popular mod is to fit a Ford Transit cooler which looks like something DynoRod would use to clear your drains or WC!
The question is, has anybody ever measured the temperature of the power steering fluid?

Not answering the question, but Daryl fitted a JDM gearbox oil cooler in place of the power steering kettle element on his CS and we've just done the same on Dans 205. Totally unscientific, but working on the theory it can only help on cars that get a bit of hard cornering.

Stop sawing at the wheel mid corner and pick a decent line to start with

I would if I have time...quickly come on thrash about, catch up and off again - best bet is to call me

I ran a MOCAL oil cooler setup.
But the problem is the power steering bottle.
I have a forge one for the track build.
Believe it or not, a piece of corn flake packet cut into a disc and put under the rubber cap seal fixed the leaking everywhere scenario.

Thanks Nige, I'd forgotten you had a Mocal cooler on the power steering. Leaky reservoir cap is an OEM 'feature' Like you, I shall be fitting a bespoke aluminium power steering reservoir with significantly more capacity as this will help keep the fluid cool too.

The "leaky" cap is, I firmly believe, by design

I also believe that many people are a bit mistaken on the ps boiling issue - I know I was

I think that a great deal of the boiling is in fact degassing

I did the trusty finger in the hole test one time when I observed the major bubbling look. The fluid was toasty for sure but my finger emerged with skin so not near boiling. My guess is that the fluid is flash boiling when the pressure is relieved in the rack and creating lots of gas-- it's a pretty low content system with lots of big metal lumps so maybe it does boil in the pump but is reasonably cool upon return to the reservoir
Either way I presume the non sealed system is deliberate to prevent pressurisation of the whole system - Toyota doesn't have great form on the pressure proof plastic reservoir (ST165 coolant header)

IIRC MrBarry fitted a finned pipe in his wheelarch (sans liner) and reported the problem solved so i'll guess not much cooling is required
I don't know if you can over cool ps fluid but i'd guess a 7 or 9 row wide cooler would be more than adequate

Or, when I finally convince you on electric ps just make provision for a fan pointed at the steering column

Hi,

water could also couse a lower boiling point once the fluid is older :)

i did this, so i'am with you just a little cooling will work

i raced the car a lot on gravel -> much steering and low air flow without any problems
